My googlefu sucks.
I have a Gerber fixed blade 1.5 inches ath the widest. 4 inches long. The Chinese prisoner sheath it came with is aweful. I am looking but cannot find one to replace it. Nylon, kydex, whatever...just reasonably priced. Help! V OUT |

Cut out slightly larger silhouette of the blade using a flat piece of stiff plastic/polymer. One of those plastic license plates that dealers have their name printed on and put on new cars worked good for me. (Kydex is too costly to use for this specific application.) Fold a piece of oil tanned leather over it with the knife inside to make a single seam pouch. Take a number of antique finish furniture upholstery tacks and drive in the leather to staple the pouch together. Test for tension and holding abiltiy then use a needle nose plier to turn/curl the points over and tap the pin down to hold the tack in the leather.
Cut a long slot in the leather to the outside of the seam and outline that with more tacks to support it as a belt loop. It's kind of 1800's look but it worked for hundreds of buffalo skinners. I've had a couple sheaths I've made for Green River pattern knives and they work great. For an alternative belt carry method you can put a Sam Browne belt stud in the leather to hold it above your belt or cut a short slash in your belt with a hole at the end of the slot for the stud to go through and be held with the knife inside your belt. This allows sheath removal without undoing your belt and yet is much more secure than just sticking it in your belt. You'll need to think about what placement of the stud you want. The top of the sheath must always be completely above the belt. You could also make the stud extra high and make a leather loop with two button holes to go over the stud to act as a removeable belt loop. |
