I am doing some research for a fixed blade knife to put on my pack to take out backpacking. Will I get hassled by leo, dnr or anyone if i was to get a esee junglas or a esee 6 or Rat 7 type of knife. Am looking for a fixed blade i can make kindling and such if need be and just a good quality knife any suggestions would also be appreciated. This will just be for backpacking trips and things of that nature. Thanks in advance for any input and help. Oh and the states I am thinking or MN, WI and iowa

I go backpacking about once a month if I'm lucky, either in IN or KY.  I don't know what the laws r out there, but I have never been hassled for carrying a large knife on me while backpacking.  I have been bringing an old Rat Cutlery (ESEE) Izula & a Cold Steel Kukri machete for about 2 years now, but just got an ESEE 6 about a month ago & will be replacing the machete on most trips :)  Have yet to take it out backpacking, but I think it will work much better for fire prep & shelter building than the machete.  I say go for the ESEE 6... Cheaper in price & it weighes a hell of a lot less.  I don't count every ounce when I pack, but I try to save weight for beer

Beer? Too heavy. Take brandy.

If you aren't really into knives and don't wanna blow the bank, I present the Mora Clipper.
Knife

Many backpackers use those. Get 2, put one in the pack and one on your belt. Nobody is gonna hassle you , especially if you have the orange one on your belt.

I am a knife snob and had to blow $300 for my hiking knife.

I have no interest in the company linked, it was just the first to pop up in the search.

I have a TOPS Rhino.

I think the key is to not have the knife concealed.  Mount it on your pack straps or on your belt and you should be okay.  Check your local laws, first.

Knife while backpacking? Always. Usually folder and a smaller sheath knife about 3.5
inch blade. Anything sturdy and not black.

A large Leatherman or Victorinox multitool will serve you well.

Why not black?  I usually carry my M9 or SOG Patriot, and have never been hassled. Hell,I even walked into the ranger's office with it on my hip.

Black is easy to lose if u drop it in the woods.  My favorite color combo is orange & green, but have yet to pick up an ESEE 3 in that color.  That being said, most of my camp knives have micarta handles & patina blades, lol... Haven't lost 1 yet, but it helps to have bright colors

Well Tops, technically, you are right.   But, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

I can tell you this much.   I have no interest in seeing your products now.    Keep up the efforts of ticking people off.   Let us see where that leads.

Priced comparable to the ESEE

This is what I have (with micarta handle).

Ah. Gotcha. I did have a heart-stopping moment once when I misplaced my M9 at Enchanted Rock.

Your not going to get hassled by any LEO or DNR that I know of I think they almost expect every one to have a knife or in my neck of the woods a gun too while backpacking. It would be stupid to go backpacking with out at least one good knife IMO. Most of my hiking is in MN, Northern ND, and out west.

The biggest hassle will be the sheeple sharing the trail.  Most don't think anything is needed except toe-nail clippers.  You shouldn't have any heartburn unless you hacking away on live trees.

LOL, what a bunch of pussies...  Some call it theft while others call free advertising...  Just one more reason to dislike TOPS IMHO!!!  Needless to say, I won't be taking them up on their offer to see the image on their website...  LOL!!!   If I want over priced, over hyped mediocrity, I'll visit the Cold Steel website instead...    (nothing personal to the poster, I just have never been very impressed by TOPS in general)

What the heck are you guys talking about while raggin' on TOPS?  You seem to have some agenda which is beyond me.

The knife I have is great.  There's nothing wrong with it.  It's well made.  Looks good.  Feels good in the hand.  Has a well made, secure sheath.

have to add: TOPS' designs do not appeal to me, nor does their  cheesy advertising, and to bitch about people hotlinking is just plain stupid, theft? maybe, but under what crimes code and good luck getting someone to prosecute, just  one more reason for me not to buy their stuff.

Anyway, back to what matters,  I live about 5 miles from the AT and spend alot of time backpacking on it.  I carry an old busse BA and have never gotten so much as a 2nd look, even when I stop in a local watering hole that is near the trail for an after hike beer.   I think the ESEE 6 is a great trail knife, nice size, good construction, not too much $.

If you want to spend a little more ($200 or so) look at a Caldwell model 5, my buddy got one and it is a nice blade.

BTW, I stole this image from Ft Henry Knives (who has these in stock) so maybe one of you guys should alert the authorities!

The comment about the 'not black' about the knife is that people are too concerned with appearances rather than functionality. Not having a 'black, menacing' blade ( sic) helps keep things cool. Ever hear of Sun Tsu's 'Art of War' and his "36 Stratagems"? Number one is "Deceive Heaven To Cross The Ocean"...refers to doing something glaringly open to accomplish something else.

I like tie dye. It gives me great camouflage from people who think I am some hippie. Those that don't...to them I look like a sheep. If I am on a trail I desire to look innocuous...and so the tie dye (I hate military and hunter camo anyway) but I walk with purpose and determination at the same time. My knife is right in the open but is not really noticed. So, I win. Heaven help the moron that thinks I would lay down and do nothing if pressed. LOl.

Oh, I see that now.  Earlier today, I could still see the photos.  That is really wierd of TOPS to do that.  Heck, if anything, it was free advertising for them.

Well, setting aside thier policy on internet images, the knife I have from them is till a good knife.

I like that Caldwell, too.  The handle appeals to me.  I will have to alert the authorities about your theft of the images.  The black helicopters aare on their way to you as I type this.

I also have one of these - a classic design that comes with an excellent leather sheath.
