Who carries an EDC fixed blade in a horizontal sheath? I am especially looking for opinions on carrying at the small of your back. Likes/dislikes? Do you carry blade up or down? What size?

I am thinking about replacing the small blade i carry now with an ESEE Izula or 3 and carrying it SOB style with the blade down like pictured below. I am just not 100% sure yet before dropping the coin.

I've given up on carrying anything SOB. Presents too great of a risk for me to incorporate it. I did have a little kydex horizontal sheath for an Izula that I carried at the 10-11:00 position, blade down. Eventually got rid of it.

I carry a Timberline Lightfoot Mini Pit Bull clipped to the belt loops of my 5.11's horizontally next to my belt buckle, anything bigger would be harder to conceal.

I carry horizontally, SOB with the handle towards weak side almost daily. If I'm not carrying SOB, I'm carrying appendix. But carrying SOB allows me to carry a knife with a 6" blade and a 5" handle.

If you carry anything in the small of your back you are risking a spine injury should you fall. It also looks like that style of knife carry would severely limit your CCW options. (Not an issue if you don't carry.)

In ohio I think any blade over 3" is illegal to conceal so I always try to have smaller blades and more handle for concealed blades. I can still slash and it makes a nice blunt object with the handle.

I've carried a pistol at the small of my back a lot before, but recently i've been sticking with a J Frame in my front pocket as its getting hot here. A Glock or Sig SOB bothers me in the heat. So a knife at SOB should be fairly comfortable.

I guess the only way to tell is to do it and see for myself!

A guy I know just fell out of his vehicle while on duty and landed on his cuffs which he had right over his spine. He broke two vertebrae in his lower back. Had to be medivac'd to the ER where they fuzed the broken vertebrae to the nearby ones. He is in his early 60's, and is now effectively retired as a result of this event. He's still bed ridden and it will take months for him to be able to move on his own.

All he did was slipped when getting out of his vehicle on a dirt road, and that was enough to make it game over. He laid there in the dirt for two and a half hours until someone happened to come by. He was in an area where he had no signal or radio contact. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend ever carrying anything over your SOB.

I’ve taken to horizontal carry on the front for cross draw carry.  Even with a pack’s waist belt, it rides just below and is still easy to access.  It’s also easy to draw when seated or odd working angles.  Blades can’t be too big or they just get in the way; I’m currently carry a small Ka Bar TDI in a Kydex cross-draw sheath here in A’stan.  It doesn’t get in the way when fully loaded or riding helos/vehicles and I can easily draw as long when seated.  Another prime defensive knife for this type of carry is the Spyderco Perrin-designed Street Beat knife.

I have several that I can carry horizontally in the front like that.  As mentioned, they need to be smaller fixed blades…the easiest to carry don’t have blades longer than 4”.  Unless it’s a slim Kydex sheath, most are not too concealable, but with a large BDU type jacket or shirt, they will cover up pretty easily, yet still be accessible.  When doing recreational activities such as backpacking, kayaking, fishing, etc, it also keeps my knife on my strong side if I plan to CCW on the waist.
