I can make a spoon dull.  Can somebody recommend an idiot proof sharpening system that can put a GOOD edge on a knife, even when used by a 9 thumbed gorilla during an earthquake at night?

Spyderco Sharp Maker Comes with a DVD that you can watch over and over to help a gorilla make any knife hair popping sharp !!!! I was one of those gorillas till I got the Sharp Maker Plus they have additional stones to help re-profile those really dull blades, Diamond stones and Ultra fine stones.

I really have trouble with the idea of a sharpener that works only for knives.  I have all sorts of tools that need frequent resharpening - chisels, plane blades, jointer blades and knives.  I'd say get a general purpose sharpening set up.  Tormaek makes one.  Also look at the Rockler web site.

After not being able to get the results I wanted freehand, I just got the DMT Aligner from Amazon with the Extra Course stone (extra course stone is seperate but can be purchased at the same time)

I love it.

I started with an Oyster knife that was never ment to be sharp. I went through all 4 stones on a 20* angle. You can shave hair off your arm with it now.

I went on to do a few cheap Buck folders and then did my Benchmades.

It's not hair whittling sharp. It's not a convex edge. It's a nice utility edge that's quick, easy and fool proof.

After you get the muscle memory from using the Aligner, going freehand should be a snap.

There is no way those alternate uses are realistic/practical.  That YouTube series makes the whole system look like a carnival attraction.  I'm sure it's okay for dressing the edge of a knife, I even have a knife hone like that.  No way its suitable for flattening the backs and bevels on half a dozen plane blades, a set of chisels, and two sets of jointer knives (especially if there's a knick that has to come out).

The OP was asking for a sharpening system for a few knives and Spyderco Sharp Maker is the best for the price and can sharpen many other tools for a simple product. When you start getting in to sharpening for dozens upon dozens of heavy duty products that are dull and beat to hell then need to be sharpened you will need something different, I can use a bench grinder for most of those tasks.  It can be done with the Sharp Maker but will take a lot more time and elbow grease. He is looking for an easy way to sharpen a knife and keep the blade sharp which the Sharp Maker does.

I believe I'm gonna try the Spyderco, although I think that my powers of dulling are strong enough to send it packing....but I'll give it a try...

That's how I got to where I am.

After several lower cost purchases, all of which failed miserably, I finally broke down and bought a decent sharpener.  I bought a wet stone system like the Tormek and have never regretted it, at all.  Yes, it seemed expensive, at first.  But I got whisker shaving close on my first try.  My blade backs are mirror smooth (this is not an exaggeration).

A bench grinder gets the blade too hot and is too difficult to control without considerable skill.  The really good wheels you'll want are not cheap, either.  The wheels are the major element of the cost and they last a long, long time.
