I am a freelance writer and occassionally write for the magazines like Blade, SWAT and Gun Digest.
They have certain quitks about what they want to see in articles and what they don't want to see. As a reader, what would you like to see in knife articles beyond pictures? Performance? Maker interviews? How knives are made? Carry modes? Anything else? In something like performance, what would you like to see in an evaluation beyond cutting rope or as one magazine likes to report...chopping onions? A new outfit I'm considering writing for wants to give me "free reign". Thanks in advance. |

I'd like to see knives tested for what they are designed for.
For instance, any purported fighting knife needs to be stabbed into a side of beef ribs and maybe slashes and snap cuts on a roast or something. Bush knives need to cut wood and prepare food. A combat/field knife needs to do all the above. I don't care or need to see a knife chop through a Volkswagen or concrete block. Edge retention, ease of sharpening, and comfort should also be mentioned. |
| ^^^^^^^^^this.......cutting onions? Seriously? The knife ALWAYS needs to be tested as to what it was made for and nothing else. Cutting rope is okay if you are a rigger or old sailor or as a wear cutting test but really....who cuts 1 inch free hanging manilla rope all day long for a job? |

I caught a show on Modern Marvels about a guy in Wahington State who made his own Damascus steel to make knives out of. Tha was cool.
I'd like to see how knives are made from concept to manufacture. Also characteristics and properties of different steels would be helpful. For example how long it takes to sharpen different steels and then how long each edge lasts in real world uses. |
