Return it and buy a Lansky. That is the best in my opinion.

THIS.

I was always incompetent at sharpening until I bought a Lansky.  Now all of my knives are scary sharp.

agreed, I could make a rounded edge that was barely capable of cutting before (it was sharper than a baseball bat)
now that I have discovered the lansky STYLE of sharpener I can make my blades scary sharp!

I currently run the smiths knockoff of a lansky but that's just because the lansky won't be delivered till friday

Lansky.
I bought one about a month ago to sharpen my hunting knives.
I could shave with the first knife I sharpened with a Lansky, only spent about 10 minutes on it.
After a little practice I now have to intentionally stop sharpening my edc knives before they become a danger for me to use.
I didn't cut off my finger but when I first did my edc knife (crkt m16) and then tried to cut insulation off of automotive wiring, I kept accidently cutting through the wires.

I use the Lansky, but found It blows for larger knives. Small folders and the like, it's the cats meow. Too much larger and you have to start moving the "mount" to get it to work right. I'm looking at the Spyderco Sharpmaker at the moment. Can't seem to find anyone that doesn't like it.

Exactly my findings IRT the Lansky.  I bought a Sharpmaker when they first came out, bought mine at the PX at Fort Gordon.  Over the years it has become my "go to" sharpening tool.  I don't use the Lansky at all any more.

Spyderco Sharpmaker FTW!

What kind of stone.  Diamond stone will look like metal grateing with a color coded material underneath, or good old wet stone.

I bought a smith and then was given a lansky as a gift.  The lansky is much easier to use than the smith (at least for me)  but it is harder on larger blades.  I just ordered a spyderco sharpmaker from amazon.

I was in the same spot you were about a month ago OP.  I talked to a friends father who is always sharpening knives for everyone and he told me to pick up a diamond stone and learn how to use it.  I picked up a Smiths diamond stone and watched a video on youtube, put a decent edge on an old carry knife after a few minutes.

After that I picked up a smaller stone to take camping with me.  I like them both.

For $16 the smiths diamond stone on amazon is really handy.

The Lansky "Fold A Vee" stick sharpener works great for very small knives, actually any knive with a blade from 1-1/2" up to about 6". There are two angles, 17 or 37 degrees; it's very easy to hold steady in use; and when done, it folds into a very light and compact package that'll fit into any small knapsack of musset bag.  Last but not least, it's only $12.29 from Amazon.

received my spyderco in the mail yesterday.  My wife thinks I have an illness as I have not stopped using it since it came out of the package.

Anybody want to buy a smith?

For simple and easy to touch up a blade, it is hard to beat the Spyderco Sharpmaker.  Get the diamond stones to reset the bevel, and you are good to go.  The trick is to not let your knives get dull.

I personally use a steel and a strop for the vast majority of my sharpening needs.

From what I've learned, a steel isn't really for sharpening, its for honing. You need to be able to remove metal to sharpen.

If you keep your blade maintained with a strop or steel you shouldn't have to resharpen all the often right?

I won`t find out until Christmas morning.

I do have a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and it works damned good.

Wanted something to profile, and polish blades, so I asked for an EDGEPRO Apex 4.

just go with either the stone or diamond 5 stone kit

both will work but the extra price for diamond may or may not be worth it to you.
diamond is nice though

As a maker I recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker to my customers since it is easy to use and is usually something they will be willing to use on a regular basis.  The EdgePro is the best, but it is expensive.

If your knife is larger or shaped in any other way than a Swiss army copy you'll never get a decent edge.

Practice with a stone.

I have some Japanese whetstones.  Synthetic and 800 and 4000.  I primarily use the 800.  Should I also get a diamond stone?

I know you asked about stones but If you want a really great edge you should look into  a belt sander with a leather strop. Dont limit yourself to using only stones.  I used to use stones and have tried most of all the sharpening systems; Lansky, Edgepro Apex, , Spyderco, Razors edge, etc.  I even used to use a mouse pad and sandpaper. I no longer have any patience to sit for hours sharpening knives.  With a low speed belt sander and a leather strop I can sharpen any of my knives in less than a minute and get a great convex shaving sharp edge.  I currently use an old 1 inch delta belt sander that I modified by swapping out the pulleys to slow it down. The one downside is sander is not going to be portable. For field use the sharpmaker from spyderco or even carbide sharpeners are fine.
