Picked up BM 750 used, it was dull when I received it. Put her on the Sharpmaker & am having issues so far getting an acceptable edge about the half way point to the tip. Never had this issue before, thinking it might have been sharpened by hand & they were not able to maintain the angle. Am I wasting my time sitting around & just running it through the steps ? Another thought I have that I'm not real fond of is to run it through one of those carbide sharpeners that I have in my pack to maybe get things evened up. FWIW my Spyderco Delicia VG10 comes off sharp enough to shave with. Any thoughts ?

first and most importantly, i would NOT let a Benchmade anywhere near a carbide pull through sharpener.  i've heard from several places (and believe) that they are very bad for your blade.  i own a Sharpmaker, i would rather not.  i wish someone would buy it because i hate the thing.  i'm sure it's great for touching up blades already sharpened at a 40* angle, but the stones are way too fine to actually reprofile a bevel.  i absolutely love setting my own angle with EVERY knife i own.  i decide the angle based on the steel type couple with intended use then put it on.  a Lansky works GREAT for this, if you only need to sharpen knives with blades up to 4.5 inches.  it's not very good on blades longer than 5".  i doubt you wanna hear this, but - the only sharpener i've ever owned that does EVERYTHING i need it to is my Edgepro Apex, which is your best bet, but a little on the pricey side.  unless you have some longer knives, i'd suggest you buy a Lansky, it's great for folders :)

Thanks r_i, I'll pick up a Lansky tomorrow & give it a shot. Mind telling me about the angles vs. steel type you prefer ?  154CM, VG10, S30V & how about the CR17 stuff in hunting knives. Thanks !
