Long story short, i have a groomsman that likes knives...has a few kershaws but is always talking about having a 'nice folder'....

So..i know diddly squat about knives....did some research but still can't decide on anything in particular.

Budget $100ish, he will probably carry it daily, and use it...needs to be robust and able to hold an edge well

1. Is $100 an appropriate budget for a 'good folder'? If not....what would be an appropriate budget?

Suggestions is waht i'm looking for to narrow down my search...also good places to buy from would be helpful.

Thanks!

I'm big on spyderco, that said, Benchmade, Emerson,Al Mar, all make really nice stuff. Good luck and let us know what you decide.  BD

ETA;   You should be able to find a real nice folder within the $100 budget, even better for a little more.

"nice folder" as in wear with dress clothes and has a pretty handle, Or nice as in big indestructible tactical knife?

$100 is a good number for a decent quality production folder and the options at that range are endless. If he is a die-hard Kershaw fan consider KAI's ZT series; you can find a plain-edged 0350 for about hundred bucks shipped. Another good "gift" option is buying a stainless steel Spyderco Endura or Delica and having it engraved with his name, etc. That option will probably run you less than $100 and adds a personal touch.

Agreed. Spyderco Delica, Endura or I really like the Centofante also. Or go with a stainless handled model (Delica maybe?) and have it engraved with his initials.

I really like the looks of the Centofante 3. $60-70.

Or maybe a Benchmade 890 Torrent, assisted opening, G10 scales, 154CM. Can be had at right at or a little over $100.

My vote is Spyderco Sage 1.

I like the textured CF scales and it's a great deal.  It's a Taiwanese made model that rivals any US or Japan made Spyderco in build quality.

look at the Kershaw "Blur" line

they have 4 styles plus a "tactical" verison

it's a 4 1/2 inch closed linerlock  14C28N stainless blade and it has their "Speed Safe" assisted opening system

I carry a Sage.  It is a great knife for the money.

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

For the guy that asked about whether i wanted good loooks or big tactical knife....

Looks are secondary to function, however, i don't want anything huge or overly 'tactical' looking.  The knives mentioned and pictured thus far have been perfect.

Anyone recommend some good places to buy from?  I've been looking around but don't know much about these retailers.

Narrow down which ones you’re looking for and start there. I know lots of good knife dealers, but they may not carry what you want so it wouldn’t help!

I can't speak to the quality of the knife itself (since I don't have one), but it looks like you've got a good deal there according to my google results:

Good steel though, I know that much.

Benchmade Sequel, 154CM steel with aluminum handle, axis lock for $95.62 plus shipping.

For that price, I would rather have a Spyderco Military, or a Benchmade 940 plain blade (both of which I have and recommend).  Knifeworks is a great place to get stuff, and has been getting most of my knife money lately.

That looks like a solid deal.  Anyone know how long that promo code will last?

Are you talking about the original price on the knife or the 129 sale price?

S30V > 154CM right?

Both are good steels from what i hear though

I've carried a variety of pocket knives for years. My son recently gave me a Kershaw...damn, that thing is sharp and keeps a good edge. It is my first one but I'm impressed.

Both the Military and the BM940 are S30V, and generally it is regarded as nicer than 154CM.  I find it easier to sharpen and maintain a 154CM blade, but most of my knives are S30V, and it probably keeps an edge longer.  My EDC lately has been my BM940.

As far as price, both of those knives are in the high $120s before shipping, but if you are trying to stay around $100 with shipping, that BM Sequel is a bad ass blade, and 154CM is an excellent quality steel with a very loyal and enthusiastic following.

Hey guys, late update here but i ordered this

Seemed like a good deal, he likes the assisted opening knives and i thought he would like the black handle as well.  He also hates serrations, so a plain blade was a must.

Thanks for all the help guys!

ETA: I also wanted to state that i placed the order at 3, and the order was shipped out the same day.  I received the order the next day.  Crazy fast.

Cool! I just saw this thread for the first time and that's the knife I was going to suggest. I want one of those myself.
