Gentlemen,

I'd like to show you my first knife. My funds and resources were both extremely limited, so the bulk of the work was done with files, battery-powered drill, angle grinder, and of course sandpaper. I heat treated and tempered it myself, in a campfire and the kitchen oven. The blade doesn't currently have an edge on it because all I have to sharpen right now is a Sharpmaker and I don't think that'll do the trick. I'll figure something out though. I can't do the sandpaper/mousepad trick, I know that much... I've only managed to make the knives I've tried it on duller...

I made lots of little mistakes, but thankfully no big ones. This is definitely just the first of many, I had a great time working on it. Total time elapsed, 27-29 hours.

SPECS:

1/4" 5160 bar stock
OAL, 9 3/4"
Blade length, 5", sanded to 800 grit
Handle material: Olivewood, with 1/4" brass rod pins

Every knife maker had to start somewhere.  The credit to you is that you took an intellectual idea and made a physical example of it.  More experience and better tools down the road will reward your efforts with better end results.

One of my personal knife "builds" was cut from a circular saw blade, sharpened on a belt sander, and the "handle" consisted of rawhide glued to the full tang.  Even if my photo posting ability wasn't down at the moment I'd be embarrased to show anyone what a mess I made.

Thanks! I definitely took several lessons from this one that I'll apply in the future. Next I think I'll make one from one of the old files I've got laying around.
