As the owner of three great Chris Reeve knives I felt a little guilty buying the Schrade SCHF1. But when I saw that one vendor had jacked the prices of CR knives by well over $100 beyond their normal prices I thought I would check out the Schrade version. I bought the spearpoint model from "wildbillwholesale.com" for $55.90 delivered. It arrived fairly quickly and was well packed.
The Schrade falls short of CR products in several areas. 1) the unsharpened top edge at the tip has a more or less flat edge, and would take a lot of effort to thin it for a decent back-cutting edge. 2) the paint finish is easily damaged, and applied over bits of crap. 3) the rear surfaces of the guard which contacts the forward edge of one's hand are not contoured properly, so if hard material is hit while thrusting the area between the thumb and forefinger will get injured...possibly breaking the skin. 4) the detachable tailcap does not tighten down against a metal shoulder like CR uses. the o-ring gets squished pretty well though. 5) the sheath is a sorry joke. 6) the toolkit in the handle is easily removed, which allows the user to carry what he wants there. Other than that, it's not too bad for the price, and is made in Taiwan which made me feel a little better about the purchase. I'll probably still buy a CR Project One, and would then either leave the Schrade in my truck box or gift it to my F.I.L. whose knive standards are well below mine. Paladin |
| Thanks for the info. I had researched the Schrade extensively before deciding to purchase. I know it's not as refined in workmanship as some others, but it seems to get good reviews within it's price range. Also, thanks for the link. That is a much better price than I had found. |
