I have one on the way... Got one today. Any opinions? Don't know anything about them. The leather sheath is crap. Any recommendations for a replacement? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Looking at the leather sheath, it looks very usable. Nothing fancy or anything but practical and durable... There are also "aftermarket sheaths" that are available - most of the interesting ones are "custom" work... here's one example... 3 more at this link... There are others - Google and YouTube (searches) are your friends... Good luck! P.S.: Just out of curiousity, how did you come to own an S1 and not know anything about them??? I think of it as one of the best at that size (5-ish inch blade) - definitely better than the RAT (ESEE) size equivalent. Did you really drop 100+ U$D on a knife that you knew nothing about... or was it a gift? |

Did you really drop 100+ U$D on a knife that you knew nothing about... or was it a gift? I'm not sure if the leather is very durable. This knife belonged to my dad who is kind of a knife nerd. I took my 14 year old son to their house yesterday to pick up a rifle and he gave this knife to me. The sheath is trashed. Apparently he started to put it in at an angle and it "caught" somewhere on the leather. He then forced it through cutting a two inch gash through the sheath. I'll post some pics later. I'll see if I can find a zytel sheath somewhere too. |

Zytel sheath for about $14! I believe the sheath at the link is a right handed version. If you need or want a left hander, you may have to search around a bit...
The S1 is a great knife. It has a convex ground edge. Many people sharpen convex edges a bit differently than "normal" edges... Do some research before sharpening. Ask your dad how he sharpened it... Enjoy the Fallkniven experience... |

Quoted: Other that the slash down its side - how is the sheath otherwise??? Specifically - quality, workmanship, fit, finish, etc... Honestly it seems a bit cheap. The drop-down belt loop is extraneous and unnecessary in my opinion. The leather is so rough on the inside the blade catches almost every single time it is sheathed which is what caused that gash. I'm certainly going to find a kydex replacement. |

The knife is a wonderful blade. Laminated steel, holds an edge very well. A bit hard to sharpen if you let it get really dull. I really like Falkniven, and the only real complaint I have heard about them is that the handle may be a bit smallish for those with big mitts.
Enjoy a quality blade. Doc |

I have had the same problem with BRKT knives- eating through the factory supplied leather sheaths. You ought to be able to find a decent kydex or zytel out there for it. Fallkniven makes a great blade with very high gross blade strength for stainless due to the laminated construction.
Convex sharpening is probably a little different than you are used to. Get yourself some varying grits (300-2000) wet/dry sandpaper and a mousepad. Check youtube for convex sharpening videos. Once you get the hang of it, it is easier than doing a normal "v" bevel. |
