Hey everyone, I was just wondering what the general consensus is on the Masters of Defense knife series? I'm looking at the Mark V Atac specifically. Judging by the article, the company seems pretty legit.

Got bought by Blackhawk and are now they are made overseas.

More marketing than anything.

Alliant Techsystems Inc. bought Blackhawk.

For what purpose, exactly?

There's so much snark here, but I shall refrain.

Seriously, the only thing I can see using this knife for is as a decorative piece, if you're into that sort of thing. God forbid you use that thing in any self-defense capacity.

Personally, my weapon of choice to bring to a knife fight is a Wilson CQB...

The knife in the link reminded me of a D'k tahg !!!
...except it lacks the prominent blood groove...

Well mainly I was planning to stick it on my SHTF rig, obviously the chances of me actually using it are pretty slim. I already realize that it's not practical, im just asking whether or not it is "combat worthy". Maybe I'm better off getting a trusty k-bar.

Will it work, yes.

That said there are knives that will fit the bill that are a fraction of the cost of  the ATAC, so with is the point?

A Kabar would not be my first choice, but it works, and will continue to do so in the future, plus you already own it.

I too often in these parts see folks trying to come up with what appears to be a "1 knife" solution...  I think that in doing so, folks tend to focus on knifes that are generally too large for most common knife tasks...  the problem with a 7 inch blade is that it is too big to do many small knife tasks and to small to do big knife tasks...  I think that if you want a good chopper, get a good chopper...  In my book, that is something like a machete (KaBar makes a few) or a large Bowie.  I happen to own 2 "choppers" - a knock off of an old British design (Golok) and a KaBar Cutlass Machete.  Both capable choppers and very batonable in survival situations...  When you say "combat worthy", do you mean in the fighting knife sense or more in the sense of taking hard/heavy use?  In either case, a machete is a formidable tool...

If you are looking for a good general purpose knife, I think that the blade length should not exceed about 6 inches and I think that "ideal" is in the 4 to 5 inch range.  It is big enough to do heavy cutting tasks yet small enough to do some food preparation or game dressing work.  With that in mind, KaBar makes several "short" versions of thier classic design - they have blade lengths of about 5 inches or so.  It is a nice utilitarian knife for the price...  and if you decide to pick up a KaBar, they generally sell at a good price on Amazon and they usually include "free super saver shipping"...  If you want a little more heft than you get in a standard KaBar, KaBar also makes/markets a line of knifes (the BK series) designed by Ethan Becker - have a look.  They too are available on Amazon frequently with free shipping...  My 2 personal favorites in this size range are both made by Fallkniven (I recently fell in love with their knives).  The F1 has a 3.8 inch blade and the S1 has a 5.1 inch blade.  If you are in the mood for something similar in size to a KaBar (short) you will like the S1...  Have a look for yourself.

And last but not least, for small cutting tasks, you should have some sort of dependable, non-rustable folder clipped to your pocket and/or some sort of multitool with a blade or two...  Or at least that is my mindset, YMMV.  When it comes to SHTF, I think in terms of 3 knives, not just 1.  The ARFCOM phraseology for this would probably be something like - "3 is 2"...

Good luck...

I thought it was the Klingon knife too!
You need get this sword like the mall cop has.

It's mostly for looks, really. Those tangs would limit it's use severely. I had a MOD CQB or whatever years ago. It was a heavy duty folder. The trouble with it was it's thickness.

On duty, I carry 4 knives, because there is no such thing as the perfect knife for every job.
1. Benchmade AutoStryker, Tanto edge
2. Spyderco Military
3. Wilson Combat Cop Tool (Prybar)
4. Cheapie folding razor knife

If you're looking for more of a survival knife, take a look at this knife. It is a plain looking knife that is heirloom quality. It'll handle many SHTF chores.

You can end up in a situation where you have too much blade to perform tasks. Fixed blades are better, since less can go wrong with them. Consider if you're eating with the knife, do you want food you're cutting up in the folding action of your carry knife?

Okay, I apologize for such a raspy comment.  It just struck me as a toy not a tool.  If you like it, that's up to you.   It's your money.

to be honest, I think this knife coule be fairly useful if those ridiculous "handguards" were gone. the knife is a bit on the large side but still small enough to manage normal cutting tasks. look at the nightwing if you're set on getting a MOD knife. as for MOD as a whole, I have an older( i.e made in america) MOD CQD MK2. great heavy duty folder that has alot of weight to it and can handle anything you can throw at it. I will admit though that after 5 years of beating the shit out of it theres some sideways play in the locking mechanism. im sending it in for repair soon. cant speak for the quality of their knives since they moved overseas though

You're right, i basically was looking for the "one knife" like you mentioned, but it seems that isn't entirely the best idea. thanks for the advice, I guess I need to do a bit more research. In terms of utilitarian knives, would you say the Glock knives would fit the bill? I'm looking at the Survival 81. Also I have a com-bloc bayonett that I was going to get sharpened, not sure of the blade steel but it seems pretty solid. It's the one that you can clip the sheath on and use as wire cutters.

Dunno, I guess I liked the "cool factor" of the other knife, but now that I think of it, $200+ for a knife that wont see much use is a bit steep.

I looked at that Glock knife - it's a stabbing tool - not very useful for much else (for recommendations of specific knives, see my post above).   I don't really think of knives as weapons...  Yes, I know you CAN use them as weapons but their primary function is as a cutting tool to make your life easier.  If you need a defensive weapon, pick up... ummmm, oh I don't know... maybe an AR-15!!!  Failing that, you should carry a sidearm in a SHTF...  A knive is a weapon of (almost) last resort...  A knife as a real weapon> - No, not really!  Reminds me of a line from "The Untouchables"...  Just after his character shoots and kills a mobster, Sean Connery delivers the line "Isn't it just like a guinea to bring a knife to a gunfight!!!"...

When faced with an enemy wielding a knife, I would feel better armed with a club (or maybe a machete) than a knife...  but that's just me...
