my sharpening skills have went to hell I used to be able to shave hair with knives I sharpened with a few stones and some cardboard honing. I have forgotten the best ways and now I have better results with a set of ceramic sticks and a leather strop I have one decent 2X6 medium to coarse stone, but not a good fine, so I have a good one coming I ordered I can still put a good working edge on any knife, with a 40-45 degree edge but not much more than that any help would be appreciated |

I never could do it with a stone either, so I bought a Lansky knife sharpening kit about 30 years ago and I'm still using it (wore out two or three of the stones I use the most but I'm still using the kit).
Resharpening is quick with a minimum of metal removed (always set at the same angle) and yes, they'll dry shave the hair off my arm when I get done with them. All the flat stones I bought over the years before I gave up on sharpening them like my dad does are used to stone interal metal parts on my guns when I want a smoother action or nicer trigger. I seem to be able to do that with a flat stone. |

I can tell you what i did. Went to youtube and watched a ton of videos. Everyone sharpens a little differently but they have helped me a lot. I use closer to a 20*-22* angle on my knives though. But you do need a good fine stone before your edges will get hair poppin sharp.
ETA: I should also mention I am a complete novice when it comes to sharpening as i am just getting into quality knives. After those videos and a couple weeks practicing I am getting pretty good at it. |

I mark the edge along the blade. When I set the edge on the stone you can see if you have the right angle. Keep the stone oiled or wet to float away the metal and stone junk. Sharpen one side until you feel a lip on the opposite side, flip over. Reduce the coarseness of the stones.
Polish with strop or leather belt. You aren't trying to change the angle. A ton of metal doesn't need to be removed just to sharpen the edge. Moderation, learn to stop. BK:American! You could wait until your next Guy's Night. Mention something about sharpening. Someone will step up and claim to be a better sharpener than you. "Prove It!" |
