Would the 5 1/4 inch ka-bar be a could hunting knife to gut and trim deer?

I like KaBar's, but this may not be their forte.

For cutting and splitting it'd do the job, just seems a little big for any skinning work.

I use a gut hook to 'unzip' the deer,  and an Ulu style blade to skin (Maxam or Gerber, I have both).

But, if you're looking for a justification to buy a Kabar then I say 'Yes, it'd be the perfect knife!'

And I'd suggest you pick up a Gerber EZ Skinner also...

I have used KaBars of one type or another for over twenty years of gutting deer and they do an admirable job.

I find they work very well for splitting the pelvis and provide enought leverage to cut through the esophogus and neck arteries/veins.

Everywhere I have ever hunted you leave the skin and head on until the animal is checked in and turned over for processing or brought home and finished.

I use a regular kitchen boning knife to remove the hide and a bow saw to remove the head and limbs prior to butchering.

I used mine this year on one and it worked like Butta.
