A while back I got my dad a Microtech Ultratech. He called me the other day to tell me it was broken. I figured that he just opened it against something hard, and just needed to pull the blade out to reset it "onto the track", but today I got to check it out, and something is seriously wrong with it.
When its closed, and you push the open button, it shoots out about 3/4" then binds and will not retract back in as if it had been fired against something. However, you cannot pull the blade out to get it back "on the track". You also cannot push the blade in far enough to reset it. Banging the glassbreaker down against something hard will retract the blade and load it back into a "ready" state. Apparently when he put it away in a drawer it was working fine, but when he pulled it out it stopped functioning. He is NOT the type that would deny breaking it if he had actually done something to screw it up and I can pretty much rule out other people messing with it because he carries it EVERYWHERE - from what I gathered, it went into the drawer at night working, then into his pocket the next morning, and it had this issue. Anyone ever dealt with this before? I wanted to see if there was an easy homebrew fix before I sent it back into MT. The old guy is seriously sad about this because he LOVES that knife. |
| If you are even a little mechanically inclined it is no big deal to crack them open and get them back together. They only have about three parts. It is a real simple but effective design. It sound like there is a foreign body in the housing. When you are putting it back together apply a little CLP. |

What type of wrench is required to open the thing up? |

An honest question here...
I was under the impression that Microtech will not service OTF autos unless the owner was LEO/active Military. Our local gunshop carries them and I discussed this with the owner who was leary of sending broken customer's knives back in to Microtech (to avoid the LEO only hassle). Unless this policy recently changed (as in the last 4 or 5 months) you may run into problems sending it back in to Microtech (unless you're LEO of course). |

I'm a reserve LEO but my father is not, and I was hoping to avoid this issue altogether. It appears as though it will need to go back to MT however. |
