OK
So I have some nice pieces which are not for use. I want to store them long term. I was thinking... Take the blade out of the sheath (as you always should when storing them from what I understand especially if its a leather sheath). Wrap the blade in paper towel and vacuum seal it.... What do you guys think? Is there anything I should coat the blade with first? Is there any reason storing a blade like this is not a good reason? Of course they will all be stored in a steel locked box as well. |

I would put some oil on the blade, it doesn't matter if it's stain resistant steel or not (most people call stainless).
I like the name brand Super Lube, buy a tube at the hardware store for $4 or $5. Teflon based lube. I have used it in million $ semi-condutor equipment and on my own guns. There ar a lot of others but I have used this stuff. put some foam liner in the steel box. other then that sounds like you have a handle on it. edit for Let the leather breath, no good will come from vac sealing leather that I can think of. |
| First, like a gun, don't store your blade in the sheath if it's leather. If it's a good blade, I keep it out of the sheath regardless of what it's made of. Beater blades is one thing but good blades need to be stored in a dry place and oiled regularly. I store my good blades open, on the top shelf of the safe on a nice dry cloth. I oil the blades frequently with a good quality gun oil like breakfree. Don't forget to put a light coat on exposed brass, silver or bronze, too. This prevents them from turning green on you. |
