I have been seriously eyeing the Gerber 06 automatic. It feels really heavy-duty and I like it alot. It compares favorably to my Benchmade AFO, atleast IMO. That being said, I heard some not good things about Gerber automatics. They don't seem to have the reputation of other manufactures. However, Gerber makes great stuff so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Didn't Emerson make an earlier, now-defunct automatic for Gerber? I heard some not great things about these...Does Gerber make the 06 in house, or is it too made by Emerson or someone else?

I am looking at the 06 with the standard edge. Any information about Gerber automatics will be greatly appreicated.

I had one. They have S30V blade steel and are fairly stout. I really like the overall design of the knife.

They're a bit sluggish to open. I took mine apart to loosen it up and re-lube the pivot and wasn't impressed with the construction, at all. The 06 doesn't have washers and relies on raised portions of the steel liners as bearing surfaces for the blade. I'm used to separate washers and this turned me off immediately.

My example also had noticable blade play in all directions when opened, even after I tweaked the pivot to my liking (tight-ish).

If you can get one for under $100 I'd say it may be worth it. Otherwise, I'd pass.

Most Gerbers I've tried have very poor steel. I have never owned this particular knife nor have I tried a Gerber with S30V, but the Gerbers that I do have (with the lone exception of the Mark II) all have poor steel. I am replacing my EDC Gerber with a Kershaw Leek. The Gerber just doesn't stay sharp.
