Never really owned a good knife, outside of a Leatherman I use all the time. What's a good automatic that would get me started? I'm not killing, hunting, filing, chiseling, or anything heavy duty. I'd use it for basic 'civilian' use.

My price would be definitely under 100 bucks, preferably around 50ish.

Thanks...

Although they're not "automatic", Kershaw makes many fine "assisted opening" knives, which run under $100.00 generally (except for the Zero Tolerance line).  I've got a Speed Bump and a Shallot.  Both open really nicely, and are insanely sharp.

Here they are along with my Gerber Evo:

I paid $55 for my Speed Bump, and a little less than $50 for my Shallot.

edited: these Kershaws are going to be legal in a lot of places where "automatic" knives are not.  Even though they open just as fast, with one hand.

Most decent Autos are gonna run more than $100. I like the Kershaw Leek for an assisted opener. You can buy it at a lot of Wal Marts.

You might look at Boker. They make several Autos that run less than $100.
