I am fairly new to owning knives.  This last year I picked up a couple nice Spyderco folders for work.  I just bought my first fixed blade knife, a SOG seal Pup elite (non-serrated).

My question is that I need to read up on  the proper way to sharpen and hone my blades.  Up until now I have just used a cheapo sharpener that doesn't quite give my the edge i am looking for.

Any suggestions for  tutorial/instructional reading material online and recommendations for a good sharpener?

Thanks

I like to use an extremely fine grit sandpaper on a block to sharpen and then follow up with a polish just on the edge of the blade.  Cheap quick and effective.

I use coarse and fine Smith's Diamond benchstones I ordered from Cabelas.  Im sure there are cheaper places if you look around.  For a finish I use a ceramic rod then strop with a leather belt smeared with simichrome.  I dont own one knife that wont shave my arm.  As for directons, go to Buck's website and print their instructions.  Buy about 6 2-3 dollar chinese knives to practice on.  Your guarenteed to screw up the first couple and its better if there cheap.
