I see a  lot of knives with a short 550 cord lanyard on them.  What purpose does this serve, besides for being a way to carry some 550 cord?

I've seen those weird knotted up things that look like a high school macrame project. I asked on blade forums and was told that it was easier to fish the knife out of a pocket.  Those things are apparently called "fobs"

Now if you mean a lanyard as in just a loop of cord, I would guess you could wrap it around your thumb (or whatever) like you do with the lanyard on a surefire. I guess if you were working on water or using a knife in extreme cold with thick gloves or mittens it could come in handy.

The few "knife fighter" guys I know do not have any kind of cord on their knives that I have seen.

Yup.  Those are what I'm talking about.  Just can't seem to figure out what they are for.  I don't have to fish my knife out of my pocket cause it's held on with a clip...But what do I know.

I was just truly curious to see if there was a reason for them or if they are just decoration.  I mean I like 550 cord as much as the next guy, but I never thought to have a big ball of it on my knife.
