was just looking over the katana pics thread and heard it mentioned as I have several times before.  I would like to get a usable katana from a larger, reputable company.  Should I go with a practical katana from paul chen? what about cold steel?  I have watched the videos they send with their catalogs and it seems pretty impressive.  I appreciate the expertise available on ARFCOM but please dont recommend anything much higher than $500 because I just cant justify spending that much. Thanks in advance guys

Paul chen swords are good.

I don't know if the quality dropped since he became a more common name though.

On the Swordforum there has been some talk about a slightly poorer quality that the older offering. Loose Tsuka (Handle) Poorly wrapped Ito and blades not up to tthe standards of past products.

I have a PC Practacal Tantoand it does seem to be a great Tanto for the money.

There are a couple discussion post on both Paul Chen and Cheness I wil find links to when the forum is back up and running.

You can't go wrong with something like the New Cheness SGC Goza cuttters or the 9260 Steel and can get both the Kantana, Wakizashi or a Ko Katana in the $500.00 price range.

You can't beat Cheness and their customer service and prompt attention to any issue.

I bought a Custom run Moko Katana (over run for a group order) on eBay over the Holidays last year. Listing said they had 8 available and the price was right so I bought one. I waited and nothing came for awhile so I emailed them and Paul replied that he was sorry but they had sold out in the store and hadn't ended the the Ebay listing due to the Holidays.

He was sorry and would issue a refund or he could replace it with an another Ko-Katana and sent me links he had available. The items he had were all a lot more than I had originally paid and sent him email as to would the difference in price would be for a certain Ko Katana but never heard back. 2 days later the sword I had said was a bout as close to what I had bought arrived by Fed Ex....No Additional charge

Cheness has some great sales going on right now also.

While the fitting and Tsuba are somewhat plain and void of any design details they are a solid product.

You might also want to look at some of the lower priced 2000/3000 Last Legend or LL last Pro Sword line of slightly lower priced Katana's or match sets.
