Can you guys/girls recomend a good everyday carry knife (folder)? I've looked at everything from Sogs to Emersons and can honestly say the more I research the more I get confused. I'm not against spending the money for an emerson but if another knife for 1/2 the money would sufice than so be it. It's not going to take any foreseen abuse but at the same time I want it to work when it really needs to.
Thanks,

Can you be a little more specific in what you're looking for? Are you wanting a pocket knife or something more suitable for self-defense? Or a combination?

probably a little bit of both. Something I can take almost anywhere. I live near Chicago so it won't see too much use in the woods except when I take the kids camping.

One of the lighter weight CRKT M16/M21s would be a good choice. Very durable for the money. If you're set on a SOG or Emerson, they have good choices. I'd look for a 3"-3.5" blade with a lighter-weight case/handle.

ETA: Look at the Benchmade Red line, Cold Steel and Spyderco.

ETA2: Do you have a preference on blade style? Spear point, tanto, plain edge, partial serration, etc.?

ETA3: There's some excellent tacked threads at the top of this forum discussing some of this stuff. Check it out; it might make your search a little easier.

Kershaw Storm II at wallyworld is like 30$ and splits hairs.  I also enjoy my CRKT m-16 EDC tanto.  Wallyworld for 20$.

For price and quality you simply cannot beat the Spyderco Delica/Endura

Both can be had for 45$ish online if not cheaper, premium steel and tough as nails + awesome customer service.

If you want to spend more I can't recommend the Benchmade 710 enough, its what I EDC. For the money though you can't beat the Spyderco's above.

Also consider the Spyderco Native in S30V. Can be had at most china marts for 39.99$. One of the few things in the store that are made in the USA!

If you want to go even cheaper, I hear wonderful things about the Spyderco Byrd line. As in they are as good as knives costing 4-5 times what they do.

Forget the liner locks if you want a strong knife.

I would consider benchmades axis locks the strongest and most user friendly on the market.

The 710 is a good place to start, the 610 if you want a short sword, or the griptillian line is good also.

There are literally thousands of knives that fit in to what you want.

I will just use my own personal rec. for a reasonably priced knife, the SOG Flash II.  If you search around, it can be had for about $40.

Spyderco Endura (VG10) or Benchmade Griptilian in 154CM. Both are excellent blades, best bang for the buck IMHO.

I prefer the lock on the Benchmade.

+1 on the CRKT M16 knives - solid, cheap and good for everyday carry.  If it's confiscated or lost, it won't make you weep.

When I carry a knife for self defense, I get a trainer (if offered) or make my own.  To make my own, I buy a 2nd copy, grind down the blade with a bench grinder, paint it a "safe" color and viola!  you've got a trainer you can realistically practice with and not kill people

Spyderco, Benchmade and Kershaw will all work well for you. Pick the ones that apeals to you most and then ask about thoose particular knives. It's hard to tell you wich knife to get if we don't know wich ones you are looking at.

Plenty of good device.  There's really a lot to choose from.  For makers, I would really focus in on:

Benchmade
Spyderco
Emerson
CRK&T
Microtech (a little on the high end)

There's a few others out there that will work, just not as popular, plus I would avoid most with liner locks unless it's from some of the reputable companies above or a higher end semi-custom and custom maker.

Size is a big factor most folders with 3.5" to 4" are too big for some, but there's plenty to choose from.  As mentioned, the Spyderco Native is a great sized folder.  Personally, I would avoid serrations...they're okay on a second knife dedicated to tougher cutting chores or strictly self-defense (such as Spyderco's fully serrated blades).  But they're not somthing I'd like for the majority of everday chores.

Do you want something presentable?  If so, then you're looking for colored micarta scales, aluminum scales, etc.  Not sure if that's a need, but some don't like to whip out a "tactical-looking" folder to open letters in the office.

I'm using a couple of Emersons (CQC-8 and CQC-12) over here in Iraq.  I also carry a second folder, a fully-serrated Spyderco Military for heavy cutting chores as well.  When I'm back home, I typically carry a BM Griptilian, Spyderco Manix, BM 710 or AFCK when running around town or working around the house.  When hiking, I love Doug Ritter's RSK-1...it's basically my budget Sebenza when camping and hiking.

For locks, I already mentioned staying with such companies as BM, Spyderco or Emerson, but I would probably look a good lockback (most of Spyderco's) or the axis lock (such as Benchmade's).

Hope that helps,

ROCK6

I am glad to hear that others share my concerns about liner locks. I have been collecting, using and carrying "tactical" folders for about 15 years. Over the years I have had several liner locks fail( 1 benchmade AFCK, 1 Benchmade that i forget the model name of, 1 CRKT M16-03). The Manufactures replaced them no questions asked. I have many liner locks that work fine and I continue to purchase liner lock knives but I do not fully trust them. I will take an axis or lock back over a liner any day.

for what its worth here are a few of the knives that I like to carry.

Cold Steel 4" voyager

Cold Steel XL voyager

Benchmade Mini-reflex

Kershaw Ken Onion assisted opener

Kershaw 1670BLK    assisted opener

My favorite is the Benchmade 530. It is an Axis lock design, spear point, non serrated.
The main reason I like it for everyday carry is that it is so thin.

Also *very* light due to the use of polycarbonate matierial in the handle.

+1 on the M16; I've carried one for years. (Just lost it, too!) Mine had a Tanto blade. Easy to open & it locks open with 2 locks!

Does anyone have any experience with the Cold Steel AK-47 knife? Looks a good compact knife for the money but I have not heard anything about it.
Thanks
