These are supposed to be good. It's not a tanto, but it should be easier to sharpen. Camillus Pilot survival knife. |

Does it have to be tanto? If not, check out the Ranger Knives RD series. Indestructable blades for an unbelievable price. Triple tempered 1/4" thick 5160 spring steel, doesn't get much tougher than that. Also, an unquestionable lifetime warranty. Justin Gingrich, the owner, is a U.S. Army Ranger and is awesome to deal with. You could get an RD6 or an RD7 for under $100. Tougher blades than both of those choices listed. He will also customize the blade for very reasonable prices. Here is a link to his site, where you can buy the blades or you can buy them off of Brigade Quartermasters, www.rangerknives.com/Knives/index.html Brigade Quartermasters RD6 Brigade Quartermasters RD7 Here is a link to the Ranger Knives Discussion forum where you can learn more about the blades. Buy Ranger, buy once. They are guaranteed for life. www.knifeforums.com/forums/showforum.php?fid/72/ Here are a couple of pics of my Satin Finish RD7. I have beat the crap out of this blade and it just begs for more, ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Since in your original post you wanted something that would hold a mean edge, I would find another option than the CRKT. The Corkum 1st Strike looks cool and has a pretty robust blade on it, but it is made from AUS6 steel, which is not known for its edgeholding properties. Honestly, the AUS6 from CRKT really doesn't hold an edge very long at all. At least not on my Hissatsu. It actually gets dull from drawing it out of the sheath. If you just want a blade for self defense, it would be fine, but not for general utility work. I would easily go with the Kabar over the CRKT. The 1095 that Kabar uses is a good carbon steel that will hold a decent edge. Another option in your price range would be to look at the Becker line. They are getting a little hard to come by, due to the trouble at Camillus, but you can still find certain models. They use 0170-6C carbon steel which has great edgeholding properties. Check out the Crewman and Campanion models for blades in your size preference. If you want something a little larger, check out the BK7. Pretty tough blades for the money. Here is a link, www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=395 I still think you should still try to contact Justin Gingrich at Ranger knives and see what he could make you a small custom 4" tanto for. It would be an extremely tough knife with a lifetime warranty and he might be able to fit your budget. He is a great guy to talk to, here is the contact info, www.rangerknives.com/Contact%20Info/index.html Good luck and post pics of whatever you get! |
Awesome. You won't be sorry. He is in the middle of a move right now, so it might be hit and miss getting a hold of him but I believe his shop is almost set up at his new location. His turnaround time is incredibly quick as well. Here are a few threads from the Ranger forum with pics of some custom tanto's, www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/773557/ www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/779270/ www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/778844/ And here is the Ranger photo gallery, www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/779744/tp/1/ |
