For you to run a thread making a good simple knife using minimal tools that NORMAL people might have? Like a belt sander and a grinder instead of a belt grinder? |
|
I am on hiatus for a few more months while we finish working on the house. At that point, I will have some backorders to fill. Frankly, it will be quite awhile before I could do such work on another tutorial. Those things take a lot of work, but they are enjoyable. I believe there are already a couple of tutorials that show how to make a knife using basic hand tools. Check the tutorial list at CKDForums or Dan Gray's thread at BladeForums.com. Dan has a marvelous site that links a large number of tutorials of all types. The tough part for a maker using basic hand tools is the heat treatment. You need to have an oxy/acetylene rig or at minimum, Mapp Gas. Propane will not do it free hand, but can do it in a 1-brick forge or similar setup. Of course, once you make the knife, you could always send it out for heat treatment. Texas Knife Maker's Supply does oil quenched steels. If you can find the Loveless/Barney book, there is a piece in their by Michael Walker (inventor of the modern liner lock). Walker uses a 6" belt grinder for his blades, then hand finishes them; at least he did for that book. |
Spend ~$20 for "Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop", by Wayne Goddard; you questions will be answered there. There are a ton of web sites that have knife making info with simple tools. About the only task that would be hard is a hollow grind, and I suppose a drill with a grind stone and a home made contact wheel with wet or dry paper bonded on could be used for that, too. Everything else just takes time. |
