Just received my M7 extended bayonet (to fit a 16"barrel) in the mail and there is some light surface rust on it.  What do you guys think is the best way to clean it up?

brake cleaner and steel 0000 steel wool  Maybe even just some brake cleaner and an old rag

Best to remove light rust without damaging the finish:

Soak the area with a solvent, CLP Breakfree, or better still, Kroil.
Let soak at least overnight.

Then, apply more and scrub the area with a brass "toothbrush".
When the rust is removed, wipe clean and apply your favorite anti-rust lube.
One like CLP Breakfree will continue to lift any remaining rust as well as prevent any new from forming.

Scrubbing with a brass brush will remove the rust, but unlike even fine steel wool, it won't further damage the finish.

I'm going to try that.  I used steel wool on the real nasty spots but theres still light surface rust around the hilt and a tiny bit under handle.
