Any input would be appreciated as I ponder which to invest in.  Which is more accurate?  What kind of groups are typical with each?

I'm "pondering" an investment, also. Give up the info, please.  I'm leaning towards an AR50, due to AROCK's advice. Any other input would be greatly apreciated.

TIA,
Tim

P.S.
My wife will kill me....

"A $2600 rifle???"

I'll not tell her what the optics cost...  lol

I've got the Armalite and have fired the Barrett. Either rifle will make your face hurt from smiling so much after a few shots. The AR50 is a little less expensive, a lot heavier, a lot longer, and a lot less recoil. The Barrett is more mobile and will fit in a Volkswagon Beetle so that may be a big consideration. I think accuracy is about the same for both rifles. Guns and Ammo did a comparison of the Armalite, Barrett, Serbu, and State Arms several month ago. Check with you gun buddies and see if anyone has a copy.

The AR-50 is great, I've had mine for about two years now and still enjoy shooting it as much as I can. Hardly any recoil and it's just as accurate as the M99.

Check around at some of the auction sites and Guns America, I've seen AR-50's go for as little as 2K.

I'm the proud owner of an M99, and I really REALLY love it. Never shot the AR-50, but you can't go wrong with the M99.

I have the Guns N Ammo article in front of me right now.  Here's the rundown, I listed them in the order for which I'd rate them based on the article:

Barrett M99 - 50" overall - 25 pounds - $3100
- Durable and well designed and classifies as "high end affordable."
- 33" barrel but was the shortest of the bunch due to bullpup design.
- field stripped by pulling three pins.
- M60 bipod
- 20 lug bolt design
- 11.5" scope rail for any size optic
- 5 pound trigger pull - felt more like 4
- MOST ACCURATE - Anzio ironworks match 750gr ammo - 1.75" @300 yards = .56MOA
- Effective muzzlebrake, moderate weight and comfortable buttpad lead to pleasant shooting.
- NEGATIVES: No adjustment for LOP, comb height or buttplate height, although the rifle fit him perfectly he says AND most expensive.

SERBU BFG50 - 51.5" overall - 22 pounds - $1975
- Article starts and ends with "Inexpensive, sturdy and accurate every man's 50."
- 2 lug bolt
- removal of bolt requires removal of allen head screw
- Recoil was hardest of all guns tested, due partly to its light 22 pound weight and shitty muzzle brake. (Serbu now offers a shark brake)
- Light weight is easy to trasport
- Nice trigger - 4 pounds
- Lothar match barrel
- ACCURATE - Anzio Ironworks 750gr amax - 2.20" @300 yards - suspects that sub 1/2 MOA is possible with handloading.
NEGATIVES: no adjustments, just like M99, but also fit the author well, small rail was too far forward, eye relief on the scope was difficult, cylindrical fore end makes sand bagging the gun difficult.

STATE ARMS REBEL - 59" overall - 37 pounds - $2250
- SHELL HOLDER TYPE ACTION
- rings and scope mount included
- heaviest rifle might lead to light recoil or could be the brake.  Weight was 37 pounds - heaviest of the group.
- MASSIVE bull barrel - JESUS ITS HUGE!
- Lightest trigger at 3.5 pounds - adjustable for weight
- ACCURATE - anzio 750gr AMAX - 1" with "flyer" opening up to 2"
- Only used a $40 simmons scope for the test
NEGATIVES: Shell holder type action, weight, length, narrow fore end.

ARMALITE AR50 - 59" overall - 34 pounds - $2615
- adjustable everything
- 34 pounds
- 3 lug bolt
- removable rear stock for transport
- Most effective muzzlebrake of the group, combined with second heaviest gun made shooting easy.
- Shitty ass 8 pound trigger
- 3.5-4" 3 shot groups @300 yards with match loads
- wide flat forend
NEGATIVES: SHITTY trigger (possibly the reason for the bad accuracy), least accurate, no bipod, scope rail extra, field stripping involves removing a screw for the bolt to come out

Has they heavy pull on the AR-50 (just going by review) been a problem for any owners?  Is there any way to improve it?

Cerebus,
Did you get the replacment sear and spring from Armalite? I emailed them when they posted on Biggerhammer about it and got mine. I really didn't feel like waiting though and changed the whole trigger group out. I believe the newer AR-50's have the trigger upgrade from the factory.

The AR-50 uses a Rem. 700 trigger group so just about any one for a Rem. 700 should work. I went with a standard Shilen and have it adjusted for 2lbs. It made alot of difference in accuracy as I'm no longer fighting the trigger when I'm shooting.

I only wish I had one to answer your question.  I'm still in the dream stage of obtaining a .50 BMG.  I'm just curious if others had the same problem noted in the article, and if they've been able to resolve it easily.

No problems here with the AR-50, or it's trigger. I would still get the Armalite if I had to do it over again.

50_Shooter.... What's up these days?

StyerAug was doing a 50cal group buy, a month or two ago. He posted an article from Gun Review or Gun Test, whatever the hell the name of that magazine was. Do a search and you can read their reviews on it. The Serbu was first, the AR50 was second, and the M99 was third.

I have the original Gun Test article if someone needs a copy I'll make one up for you.
