Other then that being a dummy round, can't tell you what the bullet is. I was going to say is it upside down?

Kinda looks like a ball or AP round that didn't make it through all the cycles of being formed.

The case is from 1942 Twin Cities plant.

Is it possible that the projectile is one of the Artillery Marker rounds?

If you're thinking of the spotter tracer round, no, those were loaded on the smaller .50 cases. They were around 830 grs. with the tips painted red and yellow.

I would have to ask Keith Pagel but I'm pretty sure that they loaded very few if any into a full-sized .50 case for use. Most of the ones that you see on the market are reloads or remanufactured.

You have to be very careful when you reload them as they were never made to be fired at the same velocities as a 50 BMG.

My guess is its an AP loaded upside down.  The neck is split and it is deprimed.  This was someone's play project.  If you have a puller yank it out and see.
