| Is a 22" barrel too short for the 50bmg? I'll be mostly shooting this rifle at a 400 yard range (+/-). I am thinking about the Safety Harbor SHTF 50 w/ the 5rd magazine. I don't know if I like the 29". Thanks. |

I don't know if I like the 29". Thanks. I have one with an 18" barrel and it won't burn all the powder and has less of a recoil, even though it is a lot shorter than my 30" and 36" barrel rifles. My kids loved it when they were 9, 11, and 14. My 11 year old daughter shot it in the 2005 Alliance 1000 yard match and won 3rd place. Then the next month she shot a 30" barrel rifle at the 2005 World Championship. She noticed the big difference in recoil between the two barrel lenghts because they were both the same model rifle with the same brake used on both. I think we were getting about 600 fps difference between the 18 and 30 inch barrel with identical ammo. The wind affected her bullet a lot more than mine when we shot side by side at benches. I have to add about 25 moa of elevation to go from 200 yards to 1000 yards and at the match when Sarah put 30 moa of elevation into her little rifle she was in the dirt in front of the target on her first sigther shot. The 18" rifle is light enough to shoot offhand but not comfortable. It also shoots out a good fire ball at dusk. It is real easy to find a rifle caes for the short one. If I was to go hunting with one of my .50"s it would be the 18" barrel one, my 11 year old daughter at her first match of any kind was shooting 13" groups at 1000 yards with it. I ought to be able to hit the vitals of a Deer or Elk out to 600-700 yards if the wind isn't to bad. I have shot 4 and 5 inch groups at 1000 yards with several of my other .50's but never shot the little one at a match. I have shot it out to 2200 yards a few times and was very happy with the accuracy. I was aiming at the clouds to do so. That's what I can come up with right now, with my hands on, with a short barrel. In my opinion If you are just busting rocks and having fun shooting out to 400 yards and may just carry it around a little some times to try and shoot a Deer or Elk, then the 22" barrel will work well for you. Go for it and have fun. Ed |
