a knous scope on their 50.

i have a armalite ar -50 and my budget right now is not there for a nightforce scope. but i have a konus on my ar which does great.. it has a etched reticle and all.. 30mm tubes..

just want to know if anybody has ever tried it on a 50 or not and what the outcome was..

No.  But I would try it.  It may hold up great.  I think the shock on a scope sometimes is less with a 50 than what some may think.  Just my opinion.

Actually, the shock the scope "feels" is much greater on a braked 50 BMG than on most other rifles.  The shooter doesn't feel the recoil because the brake arrests it before most of it is transmitted to the shooter.

To simplify, when you shoot a braked 50 BMG, when the bullet begins to accelerate forward, the gun begins to accelerate backwards.  The gun is accelerating backwards at around 500 to 600 G when the bullet reaches the muzzle brake.  The brake turns the gasses around, much like a jet engine and reverses the net acceleration, essentially treating the rifle and scope like the end of a bullwhip.  The reverse action of the muzzle brake is never as much as the recoil imparted by the bullet but for argument, lets say if the rifle recoils at 500 G, the brake can arrest 400 G, leaving only the 100 G force felt by the shooter but 900 G "felt" by the rifle and scope.  That's why Nightforce tests its scopes to 1200 G.

I wouldn't put a scope on a 50 that I didn't have 100% knowledge that the manufacturer would replace it if it breaks.  If it has a wire reticle, odds are it will break.  Maybe not for 50 rounds.  Maybe not for 150.  But it will break.  That's why most 50 scopes have LASER ETCHED reticles (Leupy Mark 4, Nightforce, Swarovski Christmas Tree, etc).

The short of it...make sure you have a good warranty or plan on flushing your money on a "Cheap" scope.  That said, Konus makes excellent spotters that a great for long range shooting.  I've used them and been very pleased.  Plan to pick one up before next year's highpower season.  Of course a spotter doesn't take a beating like a scope on a 50 BMG rifle.

You can get a Leupold Mark 4 for 33% less which would be my recommendation...an 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 with either mildots or TMR.  You can find them for about $1000.

If you go with a Nightforce, I recommend one of two units.  Either the 5.5-22x56mm NXS or the 8-32x56mm NXS.  I have a 5.5-22 because it has 100 MOA of elevation adjustment and will get you way out there past 1000 yards.  If your shooting is limited to 1000 yards or less, the 8-32 NXS will give you a better ability to read mirage at the expensve of some elevation adjustment.  It has about 65 MOA if memory serves.

For matches, 8-32 is a little superior.  For general use, a 5.5-22 is king.  Plenty of matches won, critters killed, etc with a 5.5-22.  I went with the 5.5-22 with an NP-R2 reticle on my ALS 50 BMG although I would have gotten the NP-R1 if it were available then.  And I have an 8.5-25x50mm Leupy Mark 4 mil-dot on my AR-30 338 Lapua.

Any of these three scopes will serve quite well on a 50 BMG and have rock-solid warranties.  The NXS will just cost you 50% more than Mark 4 but with the NXS having more solid adjustments and slightly better glass, in my opinion.
