I have an early model M99, serial # 0038X. The trigger has always bugged me and I just can't take it any longer. The pull is about 5-8 lbs and somewhat rough to boot. Anyone know of a fix? Aftermarket trigger? Good smith who can lighten / smooth it? Thanks for any info.

CAll them and see if the offer is still good for the upgraded trigger. The early guns had horrendous triggers and a replacement set of parts were sent to owners.
You also got a new firing pin and firing pin spring.

You can also remove the cocking piece and the trigger rod and lightly stone them to a nicer surface finish. That helps the pull a lot also.

That's good news. Do you have a link to any info on the replacement offer or whatever it was? Either way, I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they have to say. Thanks!

Sorry, no link. When I worked there we were constantly taking in trigger groups for upgrade.

50cal - Thanks again for the info. I ended up having to leave a message for them and they called me back this morning. I'm sending in the trigger group and bolt for the upgrades free of charge, I just have to pay shipping. I'm looking forward to having a nice trigger on the Barrett... I think it's been the limiting factor in our long range shooting with it for a while now.

On a separate note, has anyone shot both the old Barrett brake and the new one side by side? My 99 has the old one but I can get the new one from Barrett for $217 (I think that's how much it was). Is it worth it?

*** BUMP *** Someone in here has to have shot both the old and new Barrett brakes... anyone?

Barrett called yesterday to let me know they're done with the trigger and are shipping it back. They said that my trigger tested at 12 POUNDS when they got it. They got it down to a "very smooth" 5 pound pull according to the guy on the phone. I would have liked it even lighter, but that's a hell of an improvement... we'll see how it is. I also ordered the new model bigger muzzle brake.

I've shot both M99s with the old and new style brake.  The old style definitely kicks more-- when shooting off the bipod on a bench, I noticed it also slid back further after each shot.   I wasn't aware that the newer style fits on older M99s.  Maybe Barrett is now making a version that does.  If so, I would say $216 is worthwhile.  Be aware that the newer style will slap you in the face more with muzzle blast.

They do make a "retro-fit" kit for the older 99s. It was $225. I'm anxious to get it on there and test the difference.

So this retro kit for the muzzle brake is "do it yourself"? Post some pics if you can.

Yep. Took me about 30 minutes yesterday to get the old brake off and install the new one. Easy peasy. Pics:

I'm going shooting tomorrow so we'll see how the difference is. The recoil wasn't horrible with the old one, but it was enough that it was borderline uncomfortable. Hopefully this one will make it much more enjoyable to shoot.

Also, Barrett did a pretty good job with the trigger also. MUCH lighter now, should make a world of difference.

Candy for tomorrow :
