I was given the opportunity to shoot a few rounds on a Barrett M82A1 yesterday (free of charge, bonus!) and all I have to say is WOW. Definately the coolest experience I have ever had shooting any gun of any kind. I didn't think that it would shoot like such a pussy cat either, very soft recoil. And it felt alot heavier than the "30 lbs" that it's advertised as. I really feel for the guys lugging them things around in Trashkanistan. Jeez... Now I need to try and find a way to squeeze one of these in the budget sometime. Has anyone here shot the M82A1 and the M99? How do they compare? Because the M99 is a little bit closer to my price range, and the AR50 looks pretty tempting too.

The AR-50 is a great rifle. I have the newest version and I like it a lot.

Go to Knesek Guns Inc. They have a great deal on the AR-50 package as well as great prices on all the Barretts.

Good Luck

YZ250Rider, do you have any idea how much ammo for the 50 runs? It is safe to say that per round of commerical cost about 5 bucks a pop. Now if you can get your hands on some surplus and load them yourself. You can get down to about 1.25 to 1.50 non-match and about 2.50 match bullet, surplus powder.

I have let some people shoot a round each. One guy did offer to pay for the round. I laughingly said first round is on me, but 2nd will cost you.

BTW Welcome to the 50BMG brotherhood.

Yeah, I am quite aware of the price of the ammo. I offered to pay for them too, as I was more excited about the opportunity to shoot a Barrett. I would've paid him 20 bucks a round, I didn't care about the price. I am grateful to be given the chance to try it out. The only problem is that it seems shooting that thing is very, very addictive.

If I were to ever own a .50 BMG I would definately reload for it, as it seems that's to only way to economically get some trigger time.

Never ceases to amaze me...the generosity of some people.  I have a similar story as to when I first shot a .50 cal.

Now that I've got an Barrett M99, I make sure to return the favor whenever I'm at the range and someone wants to pull the trigger.

Same here.  I get about as much enjoyment watching a newbie as shooting it myself.  Well almost.

On practice day at FCSA Spring Match Raton last week I let a kid from Louisiana shoot my ALS for about 12 rounds of AP at 1000 yards, then at 1500 yards.  The kid was tickled to say the least.  Shot a little video of him and some pics with the digital camera then I mailed them on a CD to him.  Boy that kid was tickled.  They lived in a small town in northeast Louisiana and expected that one of the pictures would end up in the local paper.

Ammo is cheap, even at $2 a round if it brings someone from the outside into the 50 BMG fold.

Great stories, Ya, I know that feeling letting someone else shoot my rifles. I have done this in the past with my AR-15. And now the 50BMG. Thats a great story about the kid. Bet he never dreamed about shooting a 50 for real. And the CD was topping on it all.

YZ A lot of people dont really put 2 and 2 together and realize what this ammo cost. Not many would realize how much it cost. Heck most only know what their 30-30 or 30-06 cost and that is what about 1 buck per round commercial. Keeping Apple and Apples together commercial 50 BMG is between 4 and 5 bucks as I said earlier.

That is the great thing about most serious shooters. We like to share the fun shooting. Damn good PR if only the general public knew us better. Of what kind of people most of us are really like.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  I still remember the first time my mother-in-law saw my .357 Magnum.  I believe the first words out of her mouth was, "Those guns are for killing people!"  Once I stopped laughing I got a chance to explain but even now I think she is a little pesimistic.

I too am thinking about getting a conversion kit.  It seems like the closer we get to elections, the more I want to excercise my rights.  And I am sure like everyone else, the budget is always close to the front burner.  I hope that the lower price tag of these conversion kits will make it easier to explain to the wife.

I think the last time I fired a .50 BMG was in 1979. It was an air cooled Browning M2 MG. It was mounted on a pintle ring on our 5 ton dump truck. THAT was fun

I am pleased Barrett, Bushmaster and other makers are making .50 BMG rifles nowadays. It lets more shooters experience the .50 BMG.

You can still build your own M2HB and 1919 beltfeds too.
They have to be converted to semi-auto unless you have a registered RHSP to build with, but even a semi-auto M2HB is alot of fun!
