if you want a magazine-fed non-firearm 50BMG upper, SHF is the only game in town. I do have a few gripes; three are functional:

  • The magazine catch is poorly designed. Even being careful to counter-rotate the catch every mag change, magazines still fall out. The only reliable way I've found to stop this is to use my thumb and hold the catch.

  • I got two firing pins from SHF that were improperly heat-treated. The end result was the pins peened out and the upper was disabled. I ended up having a local shop make one for me; it hasn't deformed at all despite heavy use.

  • The holes for the pins are off a little bit; this means I have to use a lot of force to set the rear takedown pin in place.

Would I suggest that you buy one? Overall, if you want the functionality it provides, yes. Honestly, all it's done for me is make me aware of the compromises SHF had to make to work within the AR15 platform. That said, it's a kick in the pants, cheap, accurate enough for government work, and will make you popular at the range. I'm not selling mine any time soon.

Oh yeah, buy an extra mag. When I ordered mine, I opted for two five round mags instead of the three rounder it comes with. SHF nicely applied the cost of the three round to the first five rounder so I only had to pay the delta to upgrade. SHF got the upper to me lickety split and the turn-around time on the firing pin replacement was just fine. SHF also re-finished my bolt and upgraded the collar to one retained with a ball-spring-detent.

Keep in mind we're discussing the UM50 (UltraMag 50), not the UL50 (UltraLight 50).
