I sometimes think I'm going crazy, but I know that I saw some sort of round chambered for an AR-15 a few years ago that used a .50 BMG bullet in a really short case. Anyone know what I'm talking about.

The .50Beowulf (.501"dia) doesn't use a .50BMG bullet (.510"dia)
There are AR upper conversions to shoot BMG or DTC or M48 ammo with .510 bullets.

Another .501 upper is the .50AE conversion.  Tromix used to make them, but I believe there are still others as well.

Nope, it wasn't the .50 Beowulf or the .50 Action Express. I've seen pictures of it here before, and even held one of the bullets a couple of years ago at an out-of-town gun shop. It had a regular .50 BMG bullet (750 grains perhaps), but the case was really short to where it would cycle in a standard-length AR-15 lower.

Nick Firis builds a suppressed shortened .50bmg (12.7 X 48MM) bolt rifle. It is unbelievably quiet.

Ahhh!  From a couple years ago.. that probably was the SSK 510 'Whisper'.  It was a subsonic round used with a supressor for really quite operation!

It looked a lot like the .510 Whisper pictured, but it very well may have been a .500 Phantom. Thanks for the replies, guys!
