Picked up an AR-50 today... Bugger cost me 2700 out the door, 2488 before tax.. Can anyone recommend a good carrying case for this beast? Also, where have you guys been getting ammo for it, ammoman? One other thing I'll need is an optic, any recommendations for that? Does it need an special requirements due to the recoil? Last, how are you all cleaning your 50's? Any special equipment, etc? |
Got one! www.caseplaceusa.com offers a hard case that is 61"x11"x6" for $264.00 and $55.00 additional cost for casters. Gerald Bonner is who I talked with. (817) 784-9138 |

The Ace case looks good for 82 bucks, certainly better then the 162 that armalite wants. I'm thinking Leupold for a scope. Perhaps in the 4-14 and higher range, even 6.5 to 20 something. Their tactical scopes perhaps? I have dewey coated rods for cleaning. The 30 caliber rods is what I could use to clean this beast. I ordered and just received a .50 caliber jig for it. Any other ideas? |
where are you going to shoot this thing? calverton's max length is 300 yards, and they only have it at that distance on saturday evenings from 5-7pm. |
is there anywhere within a 3 hour drive where 600 yds or more is a possibility? |

I've whittled my scope choice down to a Leupold Mark 4 M1-16x40MM. Premier Reticles has the standard duplex model for $1078, does anyone have a source for this cheaper? Also, anyone have thoughts about Mildot reticle instead? I spoke to Leupold on the phone about what rings to use and they recommended the Mark 4 Medium rings Any other thoughts? |
| If you want a hard case, you might use the search function and look for "starlight". A fellow by the name of Jon was selling these critters over in the Equipment Exch. I picked up the larger model sc-061352(?) and was very happy with it. I think it set me back about $160-180. |

Depends on your ring height & which rail you use. I have a pair of extra tall MWGs & 50" rail. Since I keep the torque wrench handy, I usually take the Leupold Mark IV off and insert the top turret into an X slot I've cut in the foam. Provides space for my 5 round mags too. You read that correctly... In case you've not seen it check out the mod I had done at www.shadowworksind.com/ar50_box_mag.htm. You'll have to cut a slot for the brake too. The case is really sturdy. I switch my two 50's back & forth between the ACE & the hard case - depending on which I'm using & where I'm going. |

FWIW- I tried the Armalite soft-case- it is in rafters as we speak. I bought and love a nice aluminum case from Cabelas-- well worth the month. For scope- I used the nightforce 12-42 with lighted reticle. Sits on Badger rings. Why take all the money you have invested and drop it in a soft case that will bump the rifle and scope? The rifle and scope are so heavy that a soft case only slows the bumps and jarring. Why take a $4000 rifle and scope and drop it in a soft sided $150 case. Spend the extra and get a rigid case- you will be happier in the long run! Mark |
