A few months ago there was a great thread discussing the presses and dies to use for reloading the .50 BMG.

It gave the pros and cons for the Lee, Hornady, RCBS and other presses but I can't remember which was the preferred press and dies.

Anyones have a copy of that thread or want to post a summary? Its Christmas time and I want to add a press to the list.

RCBS press is what most all recommend, if its not in your budget you could get a Lee, theres people who has had good results but question is will it last ling vs a rcbs? If you plan on doing any matches and wanted to get into the match loading heavily you will want to at the least start with a rcbs press. The big dogs use corbin press and rcbs with M2 dies. I just got a rcbs press 50bmg kit few days ago. Midway is the cheapest on the presses.

I just received the RCBS Ammomaster kit along with a Hornady powder measure this past week as well. Everything looks top quality in it, which goes right along with all of my other RCBS single stage equipment and dies.

I was somewhat surprised that the dies didn't come in a dedicated plastic box. I realize that they are much larger but still figured they would have a box similar to the handgun/rifle dies.

I struggled back and forth between the RCBS and the LEE for a year. I kept following the threads on the LEE with great interest and while I can say nothing bad about that particular item it came down to the fact that in the past I had experienced many negative things with the LEE equipment that I had and eventually replaced every bit of it with RCBS, Hornady, and Dillon.

I have zero regrets so far on what I've seen in the box and I'm sure I'll have plenty of success when I start cranking out the .50's.

I bought the Lee kit from Midway plus the factory crimp die.  For the amout of .50 loading I'm going to do I just couldn't get RCBS.  Just about all of my other equipment is RCBS, I think it's the best.  I am actually happy with the Lee setup though.  The only thing I don't like is the lock rings.  Instead of a set screw Lee uses an O ring to supposedly keep the lock ring in place, they don't work very well.  I'm going to figure out how to solve that and all will be good.  If I were shooting a lot more or in competition I would have bought RCBS.  That's just my opinion, I didn't see the other thread.

Here's a bit from the FCSA forum...

I found a new lock ring for LEE 50 dies, I don't know about anybody else but I do not like the lock rings that come with LEE dies. the rings I found are split threaded shaft collars they are 2 1/16" in dia. and 1/2" thick.
they are available from Reid supply in Muskegon, MI. they cost $7.88 each, Reid supply has good supply of hard to find hardware.

website is www.reidsupply.com
part # of the collars are ctc-238
