| Does anybody have any experience with this upper that does not work for the company? I would appreciate your input. |

It works well with a standard a2 lower, I've built a much heaver lower for it now. The recoil is best described as "a smooth push" As built now, it weighs 23lbs, with a standard A2 lower, it weighed about 16 or 17 lbs IIRC. The extra weight does a good job of slowing the recoil impulse. I would recomend getting a dedicated lower for it. To go from an AR to the 50, you need to change the hammer, remove the buffer, buffer spring, buffer retainer and spring, bolt hold-open catch and spring. One of the more interesting features is that you can actually shoot it standing with no problems. Try doing that with a M82A1 (ok, I have tried it and it can be done, kinda) I've never had a chance to stretch its legs, so an accuracy testimonial would be not well served by me. At 100 yards, It will shoot about 1" groups from prone with ball, but like I said, I've rarely shot it for ultra accuracy, mostly to break stuff :) One thing I don't like about the design is the trigger, I would rather have a two stage, light trigger on this weapon, but, without completly redesigning the fire control system, you are kinda stuck with a heavy single stage trigger. |

Not tight, but the bolt handle does not fall under its own weight, it needs to be moved into position. With the bolt in the closed position, if I turn the rifle over and shake it(as well as I can shake a 23lb block of steel and aluminum), the bolt does not open. |
now you've got me worried.... |
yeah, not to mention a few of my reloads that weren't sized all the way down the neck (oops). My bolt was semi-loose without a round chambered, and had me worried a bit. |
|
I was worried about the "loose" feel of the bolt on an empty chamber when I got mine too. I have over 100 rounds through it now though, and have had no problems. One or two rounds of the FN Belgian surplus stuff have been hard to extract, but I just used the heel of my hand. I agree with everything Gestalt3 said, I have a 29" and use an A2 stock with about 4 pounds of lead in it. It comes in at 20 pounds with all that. Shoots great, and I've fired mine offhand as well. ETA: I would like a better trigger too, some people say a JP enterprises will work in it, but I bought one and it didn't work. |
a BIG +1 on the A2 stock weight... mine was ROUGH without the weight and recoil pad, and both made quite a difference. |
The proprietary UL50 hammer doesn't work with the JP trigger. The hammer notch isn't in the same place as a normal AR one, so when you draw the bolt back it doesn't push the hammer down far enough to engage the trigger and lock it back. I emailed Marcos about it and he couldn't recommend any adjustable trigger that would work with the UL50. I could always weld or epoxy a "lump" on the bottom of the bolt carrier to make it work, but don't want to modify the weapon like that.

Well that's some shitty news. I'm guessing the Ultramag upper has the same hammer issue. Wonder how much work it would take to grind a regular AR hammer thin enough to work. |
I don't think it is long/tall enough to hit the firing pin. |

Good thread!! I am looking really hard at the UL50. The Saftey Harbor set up in SGN is sweet, but I could buy and/load a lot of ammo for the price difference of having the three or five shot mag. What I am really in need of is the room to shoot it. That and not to mention that I was in an fall 2 1/2 years ago that left me with RSD/CRPS in my upper extremities. I'm kinda worried about the pain from shooting that thing now. Never fired a 50 that wasnt timed, mounted, and full auto. And then the pain from the recoil was the farthest thoong from my mind, and it was not on my shoulder. The up side is the pain I'm left with is more on the right side, and I have always shot "wrong" handed as some of you righties say.

Can you shoot a 12 guage shotgun with 3" slugs? That's about what I think the UL50 feels like. I have a limbsaver pad on mine and it's a real pusscat to shoot, seriously. My buddy's 10 year old son shot it and wasn't really phased by it, he thought my Mosin M44 packed a much heavier punch (I agree). Most people think the .50 will be like a super winmag or something, but it's a longer slower push. I've put over 20 rounds through it in one setting several times with no problems. The concussion and shockwave are very impressive, but the actual recoil isn't that bad. |
I havnt tried since the accident. I fired one shot to sight in my son's (mine acctually, but he succesfully bagged a bird with it: 3 1/2" Ultramag Mag Mossy) turkey gun this Spring and it rocked my jock pretty good. Took me a day or two just to get back to my normal everyday pain levels. I still plan to get one, Lord willing, because our children will never have the chance to buy the things we have now. I plan to build the lower from 80% for this puppy too. May even go with a solid billet and mill out the trigger area, and drill and tap for a buffer tube and stock and leave the mag well solid. Dont know yet. Depends on how much help I can muster up with the machinery. We still want to do some 80% lowers for the fun of it just because it is still legal. A friend of mine may go in and get the jig and split the cost with me and partner up on a few lowers and jig combo from these folks. https://www.vbd.com/noc/shop/products_category.asp?CategoryID=104 Question: You guys that have standard "mil-spec" lowers have any problems mechanically from the recoil? You know, egging out pin holes, bending dog ears and such? Or should I dedicate one of my regular lowers and build the 80%ers for the 5.56? I am obviously not swimming in money, so all of this will take some time. Not to mention feeding the bastard after I get it set up. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. Hope I can do it soon, but it is not likley at the moment. I would love to have it before November....just got a bad feeling about the elections this year, and can almost smell another broader reaching gun ban on the horizon with the .50 BMGs listed Kali style. But I'm still excited, you have encouraged me by saying the recoil isnt that bad. |
