I have been contemplating placing some kind of 50 upper on my Colt HBAR Sporter lower (pre 94) and my main concern is will the pressure and force from the recoil distort or stretch the lower receiver over time?

No
The lower takes hardly any of the recoil abuse from a 50.

but you do need to "remove" a few part from the reciver to fit it, so you cant just swap 223upper for 50.. so i sugest you buy a cheep lower for 180%

What would I have to remove, something from the fire control group........my lower has a sear block.

As to the UL50 I had to remove the following on this list.

The parts you need remove from yours AR15
-buffer assembly
-buffer retainer
-disconnector
-bolt catch

Here is what my lower looks like.

As to the auto sear block not sure if that lower will work, but you can call the Upper maker that you decide on to buy and find out first hand if the lower you have will work.

for my UM-50 upper on a Bushmaster lower I had to remove the:

bolt catch
hammer (replaced with a heavy duty version that came with the new upper)
disconnector
buffer tube/spring/retention pin

optionally, I also replace the buttstock with an ACE type w/1" pad

I don't recall though if that Colt lower had the small or large takedown pin holes, so that might be an issue too.

I ended up buying DPMS single-shot lower for 179.00 so I could restore my AR again...
