Hi and thanks for looking, I'm looking for a decent 50bmg rifle. I'm not looking for sub-MOA at 2000yrds, as the longest range I have access to is just 200yrds. I just want something that can fire the ballsy 50bmg cartrige, and make everyone on the range-line think the world is coming to an end. (spare the birdman jokes hehehe) Is there anything sub-$1500? or close? Thanks in advance! Edited to add: The first one on this link looks like one made by hesse/vulcan for 1200 www.atlanticfirearms.com/rifles.html#.50...From what I know this brand is worthless, but I've heard that their .50's are decent. Any word on that? Also one last question: Is the "VM-HY-TECH .50 Cal BMG Rifle" on that link any good? |
| State Arms rifles are a wonderful choice! The shorty sounds very good for you based on the range and dollar amount. Go to www.gunsAmerica.com you will find some for sale there. Or get it direct from Lyle at State Arms, he is stand up guy and will treat you right. Either way they are great rifles! Bang for the buck you can't go wrong. |
I love my Hesse 50 it can be seen on my website www.outlawperformance.com/myhessearms50bmgrifle.htm Mine has a cool bolt, the new vulcans I have seen arent as nice as mine and dont have a very pretty bolt :( PS that 3rd rifle in the link is a Vulcan too I guess |
| If you have an AR-15 there are several uppers that come close to your price range that do not require you to crank in and out your bullets like the Watson does, although it is a very accurate rifle, slow as hell, but accurate. Really take a good look at Spider Arms Ferret50: http://www.ferret50.com/index.html. Also, check out the vendors section at www.fcsa.org |
I've heard that those beat the hell out of your lower. Steel upper on aluminum lower? Have you hear anything about this or is it just a myth? |
| Like you, I thought that a steel upper on an aluminum lower in .50 BMG was one of the stupidest things I had ever heard of. You KNOW it cannot hold up no matter how good the brake is. And if you have ever stood beside a 747 you KNOW there is no way in hell that thing will ever get off the ground. Three years ago I would have bet you dollars to doughnuts that the Waston and the Ferrett were going to be here today, gone tomorrow. I was wrong, in fact, I couldn't have been more wrong. These rifles have proven that they do not put undue stress or wear on the AR-15's lower and do them no damage. I think the only people who still stick to their "you KNOW it can't hold up" are those who sell a product in direct competition or those who don't want to admit they were wrong. It is in people's nature to bitch, and if there were rifles out there being torn up by these conversions the people over at FCSA would have heard about it. Quite the opposite, all I have heard from people who have actually purchased and used these weapons are good things. Sure, if you mistreat the lower you can damage it, like trying to pick up the rifle by the lower when the rifle is broken down and only held together by the hinge pin-SNAP-but I could do that with my M15-A4 (T) if I am not careful. Mistakes and damage like that are not the fault of the design, but of the user being careless, and if you want the truth, I have not even heard about that happening, but who would tell about mucking up that big! |

Thanks for the replies, that is good to know...I'm going to look at these conversions now. Do you guys know anything about these conversions? Are they any good? does the no-wear policy apply here too? 50bmg.hypermart.net/001.htm |
I'm a member of the FCSA so I went over to their website and logged into the members area forum. There happened to be a thread there on the ALS and it got good reviews from a couple of folks there. One had seen the ALS do well at matches and the other was an owner who was very happy with the ALS. So it sounds like a good deal. |
ALS - Advanced Long-Range Systems LLC Go here: http://www.50bmg.net/ I'm not familiar with Atlantic Arms. I've never seen their ad in FCSA's publication Very High Power, although I may have missed it. Like I said, the ALS got a good review from a couple of FCSA members. I'm not familiar with it myself however, except from their web site. The basic rule still applies. Ya get whatchya pay for. |

I don't know much about the 50's. I am going to be purchasing my first one. I don't have alot of money and have been saving up for one. Looking at ALS website the receiver looks very BEEFY. I have read on a post at FCSA that the receiver is overkill. Personally I like overkill, especially in dealing with the 50BMG cartridge. For me it has been a tough decision between: 1. ALS 2. UltraMag 50 3. Serbu Serbu looks all around COOL! UltraMag about as Cool looking as Serbu. ALS massive receiver, barrel standard at 33 inches, is the most affordable out of the 3. Also with the conversion I don't have to pay the sales tax on the upper and go through the whole DROS stuff. Considering I also have to buy a cleaning kit, bi-pod, and a heavier hammer with the AR conversions. I have finnaly decided on the ALS. Darran at ALS seems to be a nice guy, a one man shop. Spoke with him today on phone. Randy at FCSA and a benchrest 50 rifle builder likes Darran and speaks good of him. So for me I am sending a deposit to Darran for his ALS tomorrow. Man, the wife is gonna be pissed. Good luck with your selection. Post on what you decide on. I can't wait to get mine. Mabey next year I can get a Serbu........ Dan |
Congratulations and happy shooting. You're gonna love having all that firepower. |

So has anyone here used the ALS yet? How does it stand up? I sent the maker a few questions but I haven't received an answer yet, I'm wondering if you guys know: 1) can i adjust the headspace on the ALS? 2) can i replace the barrel? (with proper tools) 3) what is the expected life span of the receiver. Thanks! |
