Was it just a fade or is it everything its cracked up to be? Accurate enough to be a percision rifle and durable enough to eat anything and be a battle rifle? Is the internet posts about it destroying optics over stated?

Was just trying to point to the SCAR optic thread, I wasn't trying to state you didn't know of the subforum for FN, my apologies for it coming across like that. Personally, I do kind of want the SCAR 17 myself but I figure I can wait for the platform to mature a bit. I had a SCAR 16 for a brief period but mine didn't like to be ran suppressed for extended periods and I didn't feel the 16 did anything any better than my Daniel Defense AR.

But the 16 and 17 are two different beasts. Any trigger time on a 17? I have gotten to fool around with one once and I must say the recoil was nice but the trigger left a lot to be desired. That is an easy swap though and overall the rifle didn't feel all that heavy and balanced nicely. Try it out, if you haven't.

I have a Scar 17, 14.5" barrel, I had it shortened from factory length. I really like the gun, but I personally do not consider it a precision rifle, as in less than 1" groups. I do consider it a really good and not overly heavy "battle" rifle. Mine eats any thing I feed it, steel cased included, been though around 700 rnds with this one, had another when they first came out and it had a few chamber issues, FN did fix it. Neither one I would consider precision weapon, but that is my opinion based on the 2 rifles.

I know a couple people with a SCAR17 and they both love them.  The big plus seems to be the lightweight, but the accuracy is good but not great so I wouldn't go with the "precision" tag.  Seems to do exactly what it was designed to do and that's shoot any ammo well, not be as heavy as other options, ambidextrous and easy to modify.  Personally I would love to have one, sounds like they have survived phase one (civilian use) pretty well.  You can't argue the coolness of the gun either, it looks pretty sweet.

When I wanted a 5.56 AR, it was an easy choice, I bought the gold standard, a Colt LE6920.  When I wanted a high performance, long range AR15 type, it was easy, I bought a Loki 6.5 Grendel/.264LBC (Loki was a new local manufacturer who started out building high end AR's of several calibers at better than market price a in that they excelled but apparently weren't very good at rule following and the ATF crashed the party).  When I wanted the biggest, baddest of the big bores it was also, I bought an Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf (frickin awesome-get one).  However when I decided to add a .308/7.62 AR there wasn't an easy or even close to easy choice.  The sheer numbers of amazing AR's & same caliber similar options are staggering.  How the heck do you choose one out of all the amazing options out there? The SCAR 17, the LWRC REPR Scythe, the LaRue OBR, the Colt 901, the S&W M&P10 (not quite as high end but I love M&P15's, Armalite AR-10 SASS, LMT MWS....this is hard.

Buddy of mine has the 17 and he does get some pretty nice accuracy out of it. He went with the ELCAN optic on top of it and hasn't had any issues with it yet but that being stated, there are numerous users whom have reported their lower end scope mounts coming free.

Person on this site has had an ACOG die on him, while shooting his 17. Up to you to decide if that was a bad scope or caused by the rifle. From what the people were stating, the issues will crop up more with folks whom find a way to do full auto but it can still potentially happen in semi auto but chances are drastically reduced.

There is actually a forum post about this in the FNH armory section. here

I have both a 17 and 4 other .308 ARs of different sorts.  I actually prefer my LMT MWS out of all of them.  It is a beast when it comes to weight but I don't own a more accurate rifle.  The LMT is just a pleasure to shoot and I find myself always wanting to bring it out to the range whereas the rest go out when the occasion arises.

I prefer my POF for accuracy.

My scar 17 is preferred if I have to carry it

I've got two, one for me and one for my wife. I've never shot good ammo through either, but with the cheap surplus stuff it does 1.5 MOA anytime I want to shoot for accuracy. I have had a couple optics issues and now that I've put some really good glass on mine the optics issues have been resolved. One of these days I'll have to load some target rounds up for it and see just how good it'll shoot, from a lot of internet forums I'm betting well under 1 MOA. Lightweight, MOA accuracy, modular design, piston driven, folding/fully adjustable stock and battle proven ............ what's more to like.

I went from a SOCOM 16(sold) to M1a Loaded to my Scar 17 to give you perspective on my journey.
I wanted a lighter weight 308 semi rifle I looked at KAC SR-25, SCAR 17s, a few other AR-10's and had shot most of them prior so I ended up with a SCAR 17s.
What I do like about the rifle is the weight, feel, simplicity, and the controllability out of the box)
What I did not like stock trigger was a battle trigger nothing great(gritty, heavy, and ), poor sling attachment, and loud which is not so much a problem for me but others around me.

I have about 1.5K maybe through the rifle and have to say it is my favorite rifle of all mine.  I remedied the problems I did not like about the rifle by adding QD points and new trigger and it is an awesome rifle.

this very light low recoil loud as a banshee and very accurate but you need to keep your scope mount very tight and locktiet it too.

as far as ammo I have never shot cheap ammo in mine I have been told not to.

This. It all depends on ammo though if you want accuracy. My SCAR 17 loves about any type of Hornady 168gr bullet. The SCAR 17 is a do it all rifle. It can be a precision rife, assault battle rifle, and can even be used on entry.

Same here. It runs through SA surplus and old 1970's Indian ammo like it was made for it.
