Why are they so damn expensive? If I'm not mistaken, the SCAR 16s mags are manufactured by D&H and although an aluminum 30 round D&H 5.56 mag runs for $8.49, the "SCAR" mags are like $28+.

So what is so special about these magazines that has them fetching $39+ a pop?

Nothing special; they're made on FAL mag presses. Just load up on Thermold's for range use, they're great!

So would FAL mags be compatible with the SCAR 17?

FN factory Scar 16 mags are steel.

$30-39 price for Scar 17 mags isn't expensive. A Glock mag is like $25 now. You can't compare surplus and AR mag prices to other mags,it'll always look too expensive.

When you compare a SCAR 17 mag to an HK417/MR762 it's a bargain.  They run $80-100 all day long if you can even find them.

With modification though they can be made to work.  Few youtube videos of guys outlining how to accomplish it.

The SCAR 17 mags are a little steep but they work.

FNH has recently ramped up mag production and $38-40 OEM factory mags are becoming easier to find than they once were before.

Unless you already have a ton of FN FAL mags laying around with the time/tools required to properly modify a FN FAL mag and get it to runreliability I would say its not worth the effort.

Just by an OEM factory 20rd mag, just dont pay the insane price gouging prices some are still charging.

Keep in mind that since they're so similar to FAL mags, they don't like being dropped.

Shooting styles have changed, and with the SCAR mags being parallel to FAL mags, they aren't built for being ejected from the mag well onto pavement or rock or ground as well as AR mags.

Point being, make sure you separate a couple of magazines for range use to beat up a bit.

Who buys a $3,000 rifle and then complains about paying $32-40 for a magazine?  Almost any gun has "expensive" magazines if your basis of comparison is $10 AR magazines.

They should be $20 like pmags. Why couldn't they just make the gun take pmags like every other modern .308.

If you want it to take pmags you have to buy another lower, for example the Handl Defense Scar Lower

I switched my SCAR 17 over to the HANDL Defense lower.  Now PMAGS will fit in everything I have.

I'm pretty sure the SCAR program started well before Magpul made the 308 Pmag...... stupid FN for not looking into the future!!!!!!

Also pretty sure they didn't have the "budget" civilian shopper in mind when they went to the drawing board......
