So on lunch today I went to range and skipped eating to let off some steam and get some frustration out.  So I was shooting my SCAR 17 and the guy two stalls over about 15ft away got pissed off at me because of the concussion he was experiencing from my muzzle device (PWS Stock).  Instead of moving or asking me nicely to not shoot while he was zeroing he got pissed off cursed at me and went to the range master and complained.  Range master came over from the main office to inspect by this time I was already done and packing my rifle into the case and he asked me my side.  He said I had  no issue and said the guy was being to sensitive.  I also noticed he was shooting no ear protection so I can see how that would be bothersome but I am at a range.

Has anyone had issues with people complaining about the SCAR 17 muzzle device for you guys when you are at the range?  I was not raining brass on him and I was not rapid firing just deliberate 200 yard shots and I chose the only station that was not next to someone 1 station separation on both sides.  The other guy out there looked at me all puzzled when the complainant stormed off confused.

I have never had any complaints.
I do not think it is any louder than other large caliber weapons.
He should have had ear protection on.

My thoughts exactly the cover over the stations probably did not help and him leaving hearing a high C# probably did not help.

I shot my SCAR17 in a IDPA style rifle match and all the RO's were grumbling about how punishing it was to stand behind/to the side of me while going through the course.
We all had a chuckle about it, but nobody got pissed and complained.
I would like to try a Smith Vortex or some other flash hider only (non-brake or combo like the stock one).

If that guy was stupid enough to be at a range with no hearing protection, he's just stupid beyond words.
He probably didn't have eye protection either.
At my club, he would have been asked to leave if he didn't have hearing and/or eye protection.

I can't speak to the SCAR-17, but the flash hider on my SCAR-16 is a lot louder than a standard, AR flash hider. I've noticed it and had others notice it. That said, it's not a problem if you're wearing hearing protection like you should be.

Sad part is this is not the first time the muzzle device has bothered someone.  I have had people get up and move but I can see when you are zeroing a rifle that the blast and distraction can be bothersome but I always try to stay away from people when shooting anything with a break or comp on it just to be courteous.  I guess the people who shoot around me are pansies because I have shot around my barrett M82/M107 and yeah it is not fun but not unbearable.

This.  A .308 with a 16.25" barrel is gonna be loud, and it's gonna be even louder with any muzzle brake, but it's not gonna be so loud that it should offend anyone at the range.  The guy also should have dealt with you directly in a civil manner, IMO, rather than cursing and tattling to the range office.

ETA, I have two M14 clones--one with a PWS brake and one with a USGI flash suppressor, and yes, the PWS brake is louder if you are to the left or right of the shooter.

If loud noises bothered the guy, he should have stayed home or brought ear protection

I thought the same thing I would have held my shots while he was shooting so he could get his zero if it was that bothersome.  Or he could have waited for my reloading time (I load 5 shoot 5 and reload all through 1 mag) or me spotting my shots through my spotting scope.

Just shot mine 17s w/ factory installed PWS, that was punishment, even with ear pro.

Wanna remove the PWS brake - are these threads on the 17s = 5/8x24 Right-handed threads or LH threaded like the FAL ?

I tried wrenching it with an big, heavy forged AR muzzle wrench tool (lefty loosey) and it did not bulged at all.

You have it correct: 5/8x24 RH.

Isn't there a collar behind the factory brake? I recall one (I have an AAC MITER on mine and it has been a while since removed the PWS). If so, use two wrenches, turning the PWS and the collar in opposite directions. Mine came right off.

Yep, there is a collar, so I guess I give it another go with two wrenches.

I have a YHM 7.62 QD flash suppressor to replace this with.

I had someone shoot my 16S with the PWS compensator, and even with earplugs + earmuffs, I could feel the blast.

The two wrenches turning in opposite direction work best.  I had used an adjustable wrench on the collar and my DPMS forged AR multi-tool with the larger FH removal slot, on the PWS wrench slot.  Removed the PWS FSC30 off with no issue/problem.

ya this happened to me this past week. went to the range to sight in my acog on my SCAR 17S and while i was shooting a guy next to me just sat down at the bench next to me and was looking down range at the targets set up. Popped off a couple shots and when i got up to see where my shots fell on the spotting scope he says "man that brake is loud". then he took his stuff and moved down a couple lanes.. i take it as a compliment when its too much for them to get up and move, saw him shooting his ar15 and just laughed..its kinda like when ur in the bathroom stall and u pee longer/louder than the guy next to you.

What a whiny little baby! Has he ever been to a rifle range before? Tell him to put in some earpro, remove his tampon, and get back to shooting.

Ha, what a wimp. Most of my friends shy away when I bring out the SBR with a PWS on it. I rate it medium, one of my buddies has a "gun" that makes my eyes cry................ he likes the concussion and fire ball. It's a cut down to 8 inch 8mm Mauser, that little girl is LOUD.

I'm slowly changing ALL my muzzle devices to PWS brakes, they do such a great job with recoil. I can't recommend the enough.

I RO pretty frequently at our local rifle match. The PWS is one of the more 'blasty' brakes I see regularly. The only one I can think of that's worse is the Bushmaster Mini Y comp, which is also annoying as they both twinge the nerves in my front teeth.

Well like I said before, the SCAR 16 with the PWS is loud. A lot of people at the range were complaining. I had someone else shoot my SCAR 16 while I stood nearby and I had earplugs and earmuffs. The concussion from the blast was quite powerful. I could feel the blast through my chest, nose, etc... The SCAR 17 would pack an even bigger punch. I know I wouldn't want to stand next to someone firing the SCAR 16 at the range, so what I did was just slow fire. I used the same PWS on my AR15 and it pissed off people as well.

He's an idiot for not wearing earpro but that PWS brake is very punishing.  I was at the indoor range I belong to zeroing my 17s and I only got a couple shots off before I decided I had to double up on earpro.  First time I'ver ever done that, and I've done plenty of .308 and .30-06 shooting at that range.  After the trip I switched the PWS for a cheap DPMS A2 style FS.  The report is very different now.

My wife has a SCAR 16S and I have a 17S.
We both felt that the factory PWS brake on her 16S was louder and had more felt concussion as an onlooker compared to my 17S.

Her 16S now sports an AAC Blackout and I still use the factory brake on my 17S.

Much more enjoyable now.

At my local indoor range, I've found that my SCAR 17 isn't significantly louder than my 30-06 Garand.   I've found it very comparable to my cousin's .308 POF.
