OK
Have had a 17S about 7 months now and LOVE it!
Finally was thinking of buying a HK MR556 or a LWRC Piston
BUT
I thought more and more and realized many things about the AR
I do not care for (T Handle for starters!) and that the AR is being
made to run with a piston while the SCAR is made for a piston.
SO
Im getting a FDE SCAR 16!

Wondering.....

What are the best mags????

I have a TON of OKAY AR Mags and quite a few PMags, will any of these work?

Or time to stock up on all new mags???

Thanks!

The SCAR was designed for USGI mags.  Pmags, with simple modification, will work as well.  I tend to favor the USGIs when I run the SCAR but there is no scientific reason for doing so.

All of your AR mags can be made to run with the 16.  You just need to check ALL of them to insure that the left side of the BHO slot does not interfer with the LRBHO lever on your 16.  You will find that some mags are bult with too skinny of a BHO slot and will cause the BHO lever to hangup.  This causes the LRBHO lever to ride too high and, in turn, your bolt can get buggered up.  Most of my GI mags were GTG.  However some did need a quick hit with a file,   All my Pmags needed to be opened up.

The "best" mags are debatable...

I normally use the USGI Mags in my SCAR. Waiting for the PMAG3s to come out that are supposedly SCAR friendly.

No, not exactly, true. It is a suspected cause for a couple bolts that got eaten up. It has never been close to proven. There are lots of SCARs out there with thousands and thousands of rounds through them with unmodified mags that operate perfectly.

Even a member here who had a bolt chewed up has run the replacement with unmodified mags and it has been good to go.

As at as mags, use what works. If its a reliable mag, it should have no problem in the gun.

My AR Pmags work great with my 16S, You just need to dremel them a tad. I find they work better than the Tango Down mags I recently purchased . There's some good information posted over at fnforum.net on the 16s mags

I use all my AR15 mags. I used a box cutter and took about 5 seconds a PMag and they work to.
