Does anyone know anything about the FN Herstal *planned* common receiver?
Will it allow a wide range of AR variants to be built on it, perhaps including both AR15 and AR10 types?
All I've heard is that it will allow for 5.56 and 7.62 uppers on the same lower, if i am not mistaken.

It'll be SCAR specific

That would be 7.62x39 not 7.62x51 (NATO)

Its actually a common upper that can run 7.62 x 51 and 556 with a different lower and bolt obviously. Its built off the -17 chassis, so obviously it could manage any round less then OAL of 7.62x51

The comon receiver is the SCAR17 receiver with conversion kit for 5.56mm in testing right now.
From what i understand the "kit" contains only five components. Barrel, bolt, firing pin, magazine, and trigger module.
The SCAR has the serial on the upper receiver... The lower is not exactly receiver but the "trigger module" . It doesn't have serial number so it's basically just another part. The lower (trigger housing) being made of plastic would make it rather cheap and simple to mold it for any caliber/mag you want. 7.62x51mm, 5.56mm or anything in between.

This.  Basically, if you have a 17, you have the "common receiver".  Now if they would just upgrade the bbl change components to be self-contained instead of having to use a supplemental tool...

Thanks for the info, everyone.

So this is basically a new different approach from what other companies are doing.
making few parts compatible between the FN and other black rifles.

But from the specs FN seems to have the lightest 7.62x51 at only about 8 lbs.

The cross-caliber conversion probably wasn't by accident.  Drop-in conversion parts just make sense when the "heavy" weighs as much as smaller cal carbines.  The weight was spec'd in the original program RFP.

this video from ShotShow 2010

says that the SCAR 16 and 17 have an '85% parts commonality'.
