I recently purchased a SCAR for my collection. I like the gun overall, but as always you can't please everyone. I like more room on my forend than the SCAR provides. I understand this is due to the need for the CQB barrel but with a longer one I'd like less exposed barrel and more handguard. I'm not crazy about the front sight either.
I am trying to have a rail extension fabricated right now but need to get as many SCAR owners together as possible. I am in no way interested in making a profit on this, I just need some other people in the shape of a "group buy" before it becomes possible for me to get it made. The concept is: 1. Replace the 3 and 9 o'clock rails with a longer rails. 2. Replace the bottom rail with a longer version if possible. If the side rails are strong and stable enough I will try to add a JP/VTAC rail to the bottom to keep the fabrication costs down. 3. A sleeve that the extended side rails bolt to, in the shape of the SCAR upper, which will effectively extend the handguard another 6". Some of the variables I am looking at: Should the top be left open to facilitate removal of the piston and maintain the factory flip-up? Or should it be enclosed and have provisions to mount a standard AR flip-up (Troy, MI, KAC, etc.)? Should we mix the two keep the top open but enclose the front 2" only to mount a light or iron sight on top and keep the gas system accessible? This may be cost prohibitive when the machine shop looks at my idea but I would like to keep it around $150 total. So, any interest? |
