My buddy just bought one.  From what he was told, it's a good rifle.  We were supposed to shoot it today, but it started snowing.

Guess this is a tag for more info.

Price is slightly lower than a DSA FAL or Springfield M1a.   $1600 for an M1a and $1400-$1600 for a FAL.

The FNAR has less recoil and is smoother in action than the FAL or M1a.

Mags are imposible to find right now but are $48 apiece MSRP.....$20 for an m1a mag 15 for a fal mag.

The FNAR is more accurate than standard FALs or M1a's.....but the design is not as robust particulrly the trigger which must be lubricated or the sear will stick.

Overall I say the FNAR is worth it, it is a good rifle with many pros over the battle rifles and can hang with them....It is also very easy to mount optics on which other 308 rifles are not.

I have one and it's fun to shoot, but wouldn't be my first choice for a battle rifle.  A little heavy on the front end, and mags are near impossible to find.

The mag issue is deffintley a concern.  thanks

It is my understanding that in a military setting it is to be used as a sniper weapon (SASS) that could be used to clear a building in a pinch to set up a position, not good with a bolt gun. I think FN built it thinking the US military might pick it up. FN makes over half of the small arms for the military now.

I just bought the Light version, but have not taken it to the range yet. It will be a while before I get enough cash together for a scope.

The mag shortage is getting ridiculous. It's like they haven't sold a single mag that didn't come with a rifle. My brother bought the rifle (LB) and it's frickin sweet. However, considering the target audience for this rifle is people with MBR in mind, for FN to completely drop the ball on magazine availability in this political climate is unacceptable. He's selling his rifle and I won't be buying one though I had fully intended to.

Look at gunbroker. there's one selling right now for $500. I think he's just trying to make a point, but there was a 10 rounder that sold for $117.

I have one and really like it. It is really accurate and doesn't have much recoil. I like it much more than my FAL or PSL which I consider in a similar class. The mag shortage is an issue, if you lost the mag you have a heavy stick to whack someone with. Most of the people I go shooting with really like the gun too. As was mentioned above, its a really good 308 for a little cheaper than the rest of the big names like DSA or SA M1A's. Its really too bad that 308 prices are through the roof.

Has anyone looked into the feasibility of machining another type of mag to make it fit the FNAR?

Yeah, I gave up on the FNAR due to the MAG issue.

So I ordered a Kel Tech 308 bullpup.

Stupid question but I figure one of you guys knows the answer...

Why on earth would they not have engineered it to use an existing mag such as that of the M14?

I bet someone in their engineering group is thiking "oops, we screwed up" either that or Marketing "oops, we should have made more".

I handled one for the first time today.  Was thinking about getting it.  Then I see the comments here about inability to get mags.  Shoot, screw that then.  If you can't get mags within the next few months you just might never get them depending on what happens with the political process.

There is the same situation with the mags for their DBM bolt rifles.

I've only been able to shoot my FNAR on two occasions, first time out was 4" groups with 168gr TAP.

Second time was 4" groups with 150gr Hornady and 168gr Winchester silvertip.

4" groups at 110 yds with good ammo is unacceptable, I've not given up yet i'm going to try playing with a few things to see if I can get sub MOA performance but as of now I'm not recommending this rifle to anyone.

We got one a couple days ago. At 100 yards with non-match ammo we were shooting half-dollar sized patterns. Hardly any recoil. Ugly as bajeezus though.

What scope / mount combo are you guys using?  Objective size and ring height?  I'm having a hard time finding a set of rings or a mount with just the right height because of the length of the rail on top.  Pictures would help too if you have them.

I have yet to shoot mine because I haven't found a solution that I'm happy with.

As far as mags, the guy I got mine from was able to get me 2 extra 20 round mags in within a week and they were $47.95 each.

What size barrel is that??? All the ones I was looking at on Gunbroker show 20 inch but that looks shorter next to your AR.

Also, I heard these will take standard DPMS AR-10 mags but apparently that is not the case???

Sometimes you wonder if the firearms manufacturer's ever do any market research before they bust out with a new product. These days with the internet so prevalent it doesn't seem like it would be hard to do. I was all excited for this gun because of the price, the accuracy and what seems like a reliable piston action. When you consider what I paid for my POF308 or what some are paying for the overpriced Knights Armament gear or the LWRC SABR, this gun is a bargain. Reviews have most of them shooting 1/2 inch groups at 100yds. I already have a ton of DPMS .308 mags and I just ordered 4 more C products 308 mags so now this makes me think the FNAR is not as desirable since the mags are proprietary and in short supply.

I picked one up (as in handled it) at a Gander Mt. probly a month ago.  Felt like a 2x6 with a pistol grip.  Ugly as sin too.  Nothing I'd buy.

I held one the other day, and liked how it felt. I am saving my pennies for one. Now if they could only get the mag issue setttled my credit card would be in flames

It is really to bad that FN dropped the ball with the mag issue. I bought one to give it a try and it shoots pretty amazing. Mine is partial to certain ammo, but It is a curved scale, anywhere from 1.25moa on down to a half an inch.

Bump to find out more from FNAR owners...

How do you like your FNAR NOW?
12/14/2009 6:40:21 AM EDT
[#33]
I have one that has been great.

The downsides I've found are:

- Mags are expensive and were tough to get (I think it's better now) / they made their own mag

- They are not as easy as an AR to break down to clean

The good stuff

- Less felt recoil
- I'm getting sub moa with good ammo (mine is the 20" heavy barrel version)
- my best group at 200 yards is .88"
- my biggest group at 200 yards is 4.11"
- easily get 2.5" to 3" groups at 200 yards
- really is a lot cleaner after a heavy range session
- I liked the extras it came with to set it up for me

They are putting out a 16" version that I find interesting. I like the 20" heavy, but if I was going to use it differently (like heavy metal 3 gun) I think the light barrel and possibly the 16" version would make more sense.

I like mine and I'm glad I have it.

I shot my brother's FNAR last weekend. He's up to 7 mags so that's less of an issue now.  His is the 20" light barrel.

The gun feels great in your hands. The recoil is amazingly light. And it shoots as accurate as I can make it.  The 16" version mentioned above would be very intriguing.

We shot up about 100 rounds of privi match ammo. No malf's of any variety.

My dad is a gun dealer and I had him check the mag situation and they had about 60-70 in at each supplier he checked the other day.  They are expensive but seem to be more readily available now.
