Got a few questions for those here with a LMG upper AR platform. First.........is any better accuracy achieved with the heavier barrel? Do I have to run a hydraulic buffer or is that only for the full auto open bolt version?  Any other things I should know or opinions on them from owners or folks who have shot them?  I see that Blackthorne makes a LMG upper for half the price of a Colt.  Are these good and do they make their barrels?  This upper would go on a semi lower.

The heavier barrel doesnt do much for accuracy. It's a heavy/thick because it was mean for sustained full auto use. All the Colt LMG uppers I have seen are open bolt  only and will not work with a semi because the GI auto sear is replaced with the open bolt parts.

Colt originally sold the uppers either way –– with open-bolt (to LE/mil distributors) or with closed-bolt carriers (to Title 1 distributors).

I run mine in FA with the closed-bolt carrier –– I don't want to have to swap out the fire-control parts every time I switch uppers. I see no difference in accuracy over a regular Colt HBAR ... but the LMG barrel does handle the heat better, and the thicker gas tube lets you do more mag dumps between cooling-down periods.

So basically the LMG closed bolt is just a upper with a heavy barrel, and has a thicker gas tube?

Thats about it, but I run the LMG buffer in mine and it slows it down a lot and is really fun to shoot, you can actually tear some stuff up and stay on target very well.

Thanks for the replys gents.  What about Blackthorne?  They sell a LMG upper for around $699 with a flat top receiver.  I have heard mixed reviews about the company.  Do they make their own barrels also?

I bought a used Blackthorne upper for my registered receiver and sold it to fund another project before I actually fired it, but my observation was that the plastic handguards seemed thinner and of  less quality than Colt and mine also came with a standard rifle gas tube, not a heavy duty one. YMMV. Vail

The real Colt LMG upper uses a much thicker gas tube to withstand the heavy use.  Blackthorne is just slapping together standard parts to give the look of the upper.  Based on other things they sell, my guess is the handguards are airsoft parts.

Yes, save for some of the originals(not all)  used an open bolt system IIRC.
