I have been looking for a M16 for a while now and I just got an email from someone selling a Colt M16 with a serial #5016050.  After looking at TonyK's extensive list of M16 models I believe that it is a Model 640.

"Colt M16 Model 640 – SN: 5,016,xxx: Export model of XM177E1. 11.5” barrel with chrome chamber, sliding buttstock, 4” stovepipe suppressor with spacer and no forward assist. Can sometimes be found with correct, Colt proofed upper receiver with forward assist, vice no forward assist. Finish is usually dark black. Serial number can be as high as 5,096,xxx and be accurate. At least three production runs done of this model. Most are in the 5,016,xxx range. Should not have a bayonet lug. Most will have their factory correct barrel and flash hider – all are factory marked barrels"

How are these rifles?  Below are some photos of the actual rifle for sale.  What is the price range of these?  Are they any different than a M16A1?  Any info would be great.

The upper lacks a forward assist, and the lower is rollmarked "M16" instead of "M16 A1".  Those are the only visible differences I can see between that rifle and an M16A1.

As a factory full auto, rollmarked M16, and being a not-very-common model, it'll typically command a price premium.  I'd ballpark it at $15k, with a couple grand leeway either way for excellent or poor condition adjustments, and depending on included extras.

Is that a factory upper though? Maybe just the camera flash, but finish looks like it doesn't match.

And shouldn't a carbine/commando that old have an A1 delta-ring?

True. I'd put money on it not being factory.

Not really. While the upper may very well not be original to the lower the delta ring can be correct for the model. (which I believe this to be a Colt 649.)

The 640 is the commercial/export version of the 630 (GAU-5A/A).

The gun in this thread looks correct.  It should not have a forward assist.

The tapered handguard ring is also correct.

I paid asking price, $13,900. I had recently purchased an EA M16 conversion from the same dealer but never took posession,  but traded it up for this one.
John Thedford is the dealer. He is a good guy to deal with. Vail

WOW, talk about an upgrade!!  That is one SWEET XM177 you've got there.  Great score!
