Sorry for the newbie questions but I'm not a M16 owner just AR15.

I had a chance to check out a M16A1 at a local shop that carries NFA weapons. The thing I noticed with the selector is that if it was on auto and the hammer was dropped (empty of course) the selector couldn't be moved back to the semi position. Also the selector couldn't be flipped to auto from semi unless the hammer was cocked, is this the proper way it works?

Furthermore it would be the same on a Semi AR15. if the hammer is forward or released the selector will not move to the safe position.

And osprey21, is correct a properly functioning M16 selector should freely move from auto to semi while the hammer is forward/released.  And should not be able to move it to safe just like a semi AR15

Thanks for the info, I didn't know for sure not having first hand knowledge. With my AR15 if he hammer is forward the selector won't go into safe position; didn't know if the Auto to Semi or Semi to Auto worked the same way. Apparantly this one must have needed a tune up. lol
