Just putting together my shopping list pending arrival of my DIAS...   I don't believe the 3 round burst to be worth it for 5.56, but there is a lack of ranges around permitting centerfire rifle FA.   So... most of my shooting will likely be with a .22 upper and I'm thinking the 3 round burst might be somewhat worthwhile with the (at least, I believe) higher RoF.   However, I think I've also heard it makes the trigger heavier...  Can this be minimized with an aftermarket auto trigger group?   Otherwise worth it?

22lr does not work well or at all with the 3rd burst at least not for me. The 22lr round dont have enough power to cycle the burst cam. Its a waste of money trust me and you wont use the 3rd burst much if at all after the first couple burst. Do a search and you will find no one really like the burst set up. Also if let go of the trigger during a burst before all 3 rounds go off the burst cam will stop with 1 or 2 rounds left and the next time you pull the trigger that's all you will get.

A picture is worth  thousand words:

The trigger pull on both three-position burst and four-position FC systems, as above, is gritty and horrible.

If you want a decent trigger, go for a safe/semi/full system, and use a quality trigger (I swear by JP triggers, but YMMV).

Every time this comes up I always have to put my experience in there to try and balance out the overwhelming "not worth it" crowd. I have a Colt 4 position kit in my Ar15/RDIAS, I use the 3 round burst mainly for new shooters, as a step up from semi, but not quite to full auto. It's also fun sometimes to run 3rnd burst and my gun runs fine with 2 Ceiners and 1 spikes 22lr upper. I also like how the colt 4 position kit puts the firing sequence as safe-semi-3rd-full auto-safe, this allows either semi or full auto to be quickly reached from the safe position. The benefits of the Colt 4 position kit are the firing sequence and not having to have that ugly red plate. However, you'll have to remove your selector stops.

The biggest downfall to the 3rnd burst is that it doesn't reset every time you release the trigger.

I've been looking for that picture!

On the PAFAO.org site there's somebody asking the same thing.  It just hit Page 5.

Jerad,

I have a RRM16 and not willing to remove the selector stops.  Do you think the selector switch could be modified to stick out farther so it clears the stops?

Sure, someone could mod the lever. Look at a standard selector and see if you can figure out how to make it work, the only differences are internal.

im thinking about a 4 way setup pretty much as the poster mentioned for the burst capability with my .22 conversion kit, which runs great FA but the rof is through the roof, so having burst would be nice. where can i find the best deal on one of these?? if as it is said that most people dislikes them does anyone want to part with one??

This one requires you to grind off your selector stops, unless someone has modified the seletor to stick out farther from the receiver? The following is how the selctor works.
Semi
Safe       Burst
Auto

Or there is the other one which doesn't require you to grind off the selector stops, and from what others have said isn't as good, think it's made by tapco. I think they are sold out currently, but you can call them.. Selector works in this order
Auto
Safe       Semi
Burst

Most of the ranges I've been to that do not allow FA also don't allow "rapid fire", which not only does 3 round burst fall under, but so does quick taps on semi-auto.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that "I imagine" if you can't shoot FA, you won't be able to shoot 3 round burst either.
