I was reading my complementary magazine from the SAR show. In the interview with Jim Sullivan I noticed his concerns about SA firing from a closed bolt for accuracy and FA firing from an open bolt to prevent "cook offs".

Has anyone seen, heard of, or made any conversions for the M16 family of weapons. It does not seem like a very difficult task. Thanks for any input.

MGI has a T&E open bolt FA closed bolt SA kit.

there are also open bolt full auto only configurations available, but i don't see them often.

The Bradley port firing weapon is M16 based, full auto, and fires from an open bolt.  You see them as backups in the turrets of humvees in the box sometimes.  The cyclic rate is pretty high.

The LMG uses a somewhat different FCG than does the M231 but the concept is the same.

Here's Colt's patent on the open bolt LMG FCG.

The Colt factory open-bolt fire-control components, when installed in M16s that left the factory in a closed-bolt configuration, are notorious for egging out the hammer- and trigger-pin holes in receivers. (It seems to be less of a problem in factory LMGs; no, I don't know why.)

I would not install an open-bolt kit in any transferable M16. If you decide to do so, I'd suggest you keep a very, very close watch for wear on your receiver, and check the hammer and trigger pins themselves for cracks and breaks.

And I would not buy any aftermarket open-bolt conversion, unless it comes with an ironclad $15k insurance policy to replace my transferable lower if it gets trashed.

YMMV.

The Colt LMG OB kit is just new fire control parts for a RR. They look very similar to a normal FA kit, but each is just different enough..
